    Description / Table of Contents: Investigations on the Corrosion Behavior of Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys upon Organic and Inorganic BasesThe article presents a comparison of the corrosive effects of organic and inorganic bases upon aluminium materials by means corrosion tests carried out at a temperature of 20°C for 73hrs. The aggressivity of the bases investigated decreases in the order of sodium hydroxide, methylamine, ethylamine, n-butylamine, ammonia, triethanolamine, sodium carbonate, calcium hydroxide, hydrazine. The sensitivity to corrosion of the materials decrease in the order of pure aluminium A1 99,3, purest aluminium Raffinal raf W(more than 99,99% Al) anticorodal Ac B, Avional Av-23 V, Perunal Pu V and Peraluman Pe-30 W. For every mixture of a base and water, there is a critical concentration at which the intensity of the attack reacher its maximum. High concentrated bases cause but low corrosion and anhydrous bases are fairly inactive. There is no destinct relationship between the corrosion behavior of the bases and their pH-values resp. their electric conductivity.
    Notes: In der vorliegenden Abhandlung wird auf Grund von bei 20°C durchgeführten 73stündigen Korrosionsversuchen mit verschiedenen Aluminiumwerkstoffen die aluminiumangreifende Wirkung organischer Basen mit der anorganischer verglichen. Die Aggressivität der untersuchten Basen nimmt in der anorganischer verglichen. Die Aggressivität der untersuchten Basen nimmt in der Reihenfolge Natriumhydroxyd, Methylamin, Aethylamin, n-Butylamin, Ammoniak, Triäthanolamin, Natriumcarbonat, Calciumhydroxyd, Hydrazin ab. Die Korrosionsfälligkeit einzelner Werkstoffe vermindert sich entsprechend der Reihe Reinaluminium Al 99,3, Reinstaluminium Raffinal Raf W (über 99,99% Al), Anticorodal Ac B, Avional Av-23 V, Perunal Pu V und Peraluman Pe-30 W. Bei jedem Gemisch Base/Wasser besteht eine kritische Konzentration, bei welcher die Intensität des Angriffs auf Aluminium ein Maximum erreicht. Sehr konzentrierte Basen wirken nur ganz schwach, wasserfreie Basen kaum aluminiumangreifend. Zwischen den Korrosionseigenschaften der einzelnen Basen und ihrem pH-Wert bzw. ihrer elektrischen Leitfähigkeit bestehen keine eindeutigen Zusammenhänge.

    Description / Table of Contents: A theory on the complementing process in phosphating baths(Formation rate of secondary cover layers on metals)Secondary cover layers are deposited on metals from saturated solutions if the equilibrium of the solution is disturbed by corrosion on the metal surface. The rate of corrosion and the rate at which the layer is formed are compared, using the phosphate treatment of iron as an example. With this process, the quotient of the HṠ consumed and the iron dissolved is governed by the stoichiometry of the oxidation reaction concerned. The quotients of the HṠ consumed and the quantity of the zinc phosphate deposit can be calculated if all reactions are diffusion controlled. It is thus assumed that the crystal nuclei are formed rapidly, and that equilibria between zinc and phosphoric acid in the solution remain adjusted upto the metal surface. This theory is confirmed experimentally. It serves to indicate and to determine the composition of complementry solution by means of which the baths can be kept stable.
    Notes: Sekundäre Deckschichten scheiden sich aus gesättigten Lösungen auf Metallen ab, wenn an der Metalloberfläche das Lösungsgleichgewicht durch Korrosion gestört wird. Die Geschwindigkeiten von Korrosion und Abscheidung werden am Beispiel der Phosphatierung von Eisen verglichen. Dabei ist der Quotient aus verbrauchtem H und gelöstem Eisen durch die Stöchiometrie der jeweiligen Oxydationsreaktion bedingt. Der Quotient aus verbrauchten H und Menge des Zinkphosphatniederschlags ist zu berechnen, wenn alle Reaktionen transportbestimmt sind. Es wird also angenommen, daß die Gleichgewichte zwischen Zink und Phosphorsäure in der Lösung bis hin zur Metalloberfläche eingestellt bleiben. Die Theorie wird experimentell bestätigt. Sie dient dazu, um Bäder mit optimalen Eigenschaften anzugeben. Ferner erlaubt sie, die Zusammensetzung von Ergänzungslösungen zu berechnen, mit denen die Bäder stationär gehalten werden können.

IronOn the strength of laboratory and field tests, the corrosion behaviour of iron in soil is discussed as a case of contact corrosion. In a water-saturated soil, the size of the anodic spots on the surface of the iron is determined by the size of the soil particles, and the contact zone at the iron surface acts as a cathodic spot. A slight additional diffusion of oxygen leads to a cathodic control of the corrosion process of iron in the soil. A higher concentration of oxygen in the soil results in an anodic control of the corrosion process of iron. In the transition zone (unsaturated-saturated), an alternation occurs between the active and passive state of the iron in the soil so that a mixed control of the corrosion process can be encountered.In a water-saturated soil, there is a linear relationship between the proportion of the cathodic and anodic zones on the one hand, and the size of the soil particles on the other hand.     Description / Table of Contents: Contact Corrosion between Metals and Non-Metallic Materials in the Atmosphere and in some ElectrolytesContact corrosion is not consistently defined in the technical literature. On the strength of the new definition of corrosion, an attempt is made to arrive at a more precise definition of contact corrosion as well, and to emphasize the importance of studying this type of corrosion.With the aid of a classification of the cases of contact corrosion observed in industry, the causes of such corrosion are clarified and remedial measures suggested.The author describes a number of her own investigations on this subject.
    Notes: Der Begriff der Kontaktkorrosion ist in der Literatur nicht einheitlich definiert. Im vorliegenden Artikel wird versucht, auf Grund der neuen Definition des Begriffes Korrosion auch den der Kontaktkorrosion genauer zu umreißen und die Wichtigkeit des Studiums dieser Korrosionsart hervorzuheben.An Hand einer Klassifikation der in der Industrie beobachteten Fälle von Kontaktkorrosion werden die Ursachen ihrer Entstehung klargelegt und Maßnahmen zum Schutze vorgeschlagen.Über eine Anzahl eigener in dieser Richtung vorgenommener Untersuchungen wird berichtet.

    Description / Table of Contents: The segregation Potential and the reaction mechanism of the segregation of chromium from complex chromium-tri-sulphate solutionsThere is no chromium segregation from pure chromium-trisulphate solutions, but the chromium hydroxide coatings at the copper cathodes are thicker. Chromium segregation only becomes possible with complex formation due to the addition of urea, which calls for very strong negative potentials exceeding EH = -1.06V. The variation of current and potential, as a function of time, gives rise to the assumption that a film acting as a diaphragm is formed on the cathode. This film is a pre-requisite to the segregation of chromium, land is also the cause of the gloss of the coatings. The mechanism of chromium segregation from the complex chromium-tri-sulphate bath is very similar to that from a chromic acid bath.
    Notes: Aus reinen Chrom-III-sulfatlösungen findet keine Chromabscheidung statt, sondern es treten nur dickere Überzüge aus Chromhydroxyd an Kupferkathoden auf. Erst bei einer Komplexbildung durch zugesetzten Harnstoff wird die Chromabscheidung möglich, wobei sehr stark negative Potentiale von mehr als EH = - 1,06 V erforderlich sind. Aus dem zeitlichen Verlauf der Stromstärke und des Potentials wurde auf die Ausbildung eines diaphragmenartigen Filmes auf der Kathode geschlossen, der erst die Voraussetzung für die Chromabscheidung ist. Er bewirkt auch den Glanz der Überzüge. Die Chromabscheidung aus dem komplexen Chrom-III-sulfatbad geht nach einem sehr ähnlichen Mechanismus wie die aus dem Chromsäurebade vor sich.

    Description / Table of Contents: High Temperature Corrosion in Petrol Refining by Sulfur CompoundsAt temperatures above 260°C only stainless, highly alloyed steels resist the attack of the most corrosive agent in petrol refining which is hydrogen sulfide. For high temperature corrosion by hydrogen sulfide, the influences of the duration of wear, the concentration of the hydrogen sulfide, the pressure, the properties of the refined petrol and the quality of the steel are of essential importance besides of the effects of temperature. The author reports on last years investigations in BP-research station on the corrosion of stainless steels by hydrogen sulfide at high temperatures. The corrosion of the surface, the inter-crystalline corrosion and the stress corrosion of steels are discussed in detail.
    Notes: Dem Angriff des wesentlichsten korrosiven Agens in Erdölraffinerien, dem Schwefelwasserstoff, bei hohen Temperaturen (über 260°C) widerstehen praktisch ausschließlich rostfreie, hochlegierte Stähle. Bei der Hochtemperatur-Korrosion durch Schwefelwasserstoff sind neben der Temperatur auch Beanspruchungsdauer, Schwefelwasserstoff konzentration, Druck, Beschaffenheit des zu raffinierenden Öles und die Stahlqualität von Einfluß. Verfasser berichtet über die in den letzten Jahren in der BP-Research Station durchgeführten Untersuchungen über die Korrosion von rostfreien Stählen durch Schwefelwasserstoff bei hohen Temperaturen, wobei allgemeine Oberflächen-korrosion, interkristalline Korrosion und Spannungskorrosion der Stähle eingebend behandelt werden.

A dynamical saturation equilibrium was established in the interior of the metal. From this the significance of partial reactions can be derived and the action of inhibitors explained.

Es stellt sich dabei ein dynamisches Sättigungsgleichgewicht im Innern des Metalls ein. Daraus läßt sich die Bedeutung der Teil-Reaktionen ableiten und das Eingreifen von Inhibitoren erklären.

    Description / Table of Contents: The Effect of Heat on WoodIn a previous treatise (see WuK 9, 262-265, 1958) the authors reported on the effect of serveral chemicals on wood; the current work gives the result of their investigations of the effect of dry and moist heat on the same series of Indian woods that were the subjects of the previous investigations. Veneer test pieces of these woods were investigated, dry heat being obtained by inserting them in stoves heated to 100°C, and moist heat by insertion in steam heated, boiling water or steam jets at atmospheric pressure. The results are given in tables and illustrations. In accordance with results of other research, the authors find that the loss of strength due to heating in the stove is negligible but can reach considerable proportions with moist heat. Effects on various types of wood vary considerably.The experiments continue with the investigation of the simultaneous application of heat and load.
    Notes: In einer früheren Abhandlung (Werkstoffe u. Korrosion 9/1958/262/5) haben die Verfasser über die Wirkung einiger Chemikalien auf Holz berichtet, die vorliegende Arbeit gibt das Ergebnis ihrer Untersuchungen über die Wirkung von trockener und feuchter Hitze auf eine Reihe indischer Hölzer, die bereits Gegenstand der früheren Untersuchung waren, wieder. Untersucht wurden Furnierproben obiger Hölzer und zwar die Einwirkung trockener Hitze durch Einlegen dieser Furniere in einen auf 100°C erhitzten Ofen, die Einwirkung feuchter Hitze durch Einlegen in durch Dampf erhitztes kochendes Wasser oder durch Erhitzen im Dampfstrom bei Atmosphärendruck. Die Ergebnisse werden in Zahlentafeln und Abbildungen dargestellt. Die Verff. finden in Übereinstimmung mit den Resultaten anderer Forscher, daß der Festigkeitsverlust beim Erhitzen im Ofen zu vernachlässigen ist, dagegen bei feuchter Hitze ein beträchtliches Ausmaß annehmen kann. Die Wirkung ist bei den verschiedenen Holzarten sehr unterschiedlich.In Fortführung der Versuche wurde weiter die gleichzeitige Einwirkung von Hitze und Belastung studiert.

    Description / Table of Contents: New investigations on vapor phase inhibitorsIn connection to basic investigations on the protection against corrosion of metal surfaces by VPI, the authors tested the effects of some VPI upon the stability in storage of gray iron in air of 100 pct. relative humidity.Interpreting the results of different tests the authors accentuate the necessity of minimum quantities of VPI to achieve a protective effect.Tests with VPI impregnated wrapping paper in touch with the metal surface show that this method may be applied to cast iron also. Furthermore the effects of some VPI upon different metal surfaces at alternating temperatures were determined. The specimens, arranged in varying positions and different distances from the inhabitors, were subjected to transport conditions. The importance of these factors for the protective value of VPI is turned out.
    Notes: Im Anschluß an ihre Grundlagen-Forschungen auf dem Gebiete des Korrosionsschutzes metallischer Oberflächen durch Dampfphasen-Inhibitoren untersuchten die Verfasser die Wirkung einiger V. P. I. auf die Lagerbeständigkeit von Graugußteilen in Luft von 100% relativer Feuchtigkeit.Bei Auswertung der bei verschiedenen Untersuchungen erhaltenen Daten wird darauf hingewiesen, daß zum Schutz von Gußstücken ausreichende V. P. I.-Mengen vorhanden sein müssen.Bei Versuchen, bei denen die auf das Verpackungspapier aufgetragene V. P. I. mit den Metalloberflächen in Berührung standen, ergab sich, daß diese Schutzart auch bei Gußeisen anwendbar ist. Weiter wurde die Wirkung einiger V. P. I. gegenüber verschiedenartigen Metalloberflächen bei wechselnden Temperaturen quantitative ermittelt. Die der Einwirkung der V. P. I. ausgesetzten Prüflinge wurden in verschiedenen Lagen und Entfernungen vom Inhibitor exportiert; die Bedeutung dieser Faktoren für den Schutzwert der V. P. I. wurde deutlich herausgestellt.

    Description / Table of Contents: Influence of structural factors on the corrosion of stainleaa steelDepending on the influence of their surroundings, austenitic stainless steels show great differences in their corrosion behaviour; they may be corrosion-proof, or passive in corrosive oxidants, or they may, in acid solutions, corrode as rapidly as iron and steel.This behaviour is directly connected with the phenomenon of passivity, or with the influence exerted, by virtue of its structure, by the passive state of the surface of stainless on the occurrence, intensity and type of corrosion. The author has investigated this effect of the surface structure in numerous tests, varying the composition and pre-treatment of the steels (machining, heat treatment, tempering, sensitivisation), the exposure times and oxidants (using boiling nitric acid), examining the influence of the grain size on intergranular corrosion, and determining the effect of clod drawing on the corrosion resistance of stainless steels. The article contains a detailed report about these tests, and the results are illustrated by 22 reproductions of microphotographs and of pictures obtained by the electron microscope.
    Notes: Austenitische rostfreie Stähle weisen stark unterschiedliches Korrosionsverhalten auf, je nachdem, welchen umgebenden Einflüssen sie ausgesetzt werden, sie können korrosionsfest oder passiv in korrodierenden Oxydationsmitteln sein oder können in sauren Lösungen ebenso schnell korrodieren wie Eisen und Stahl.Dieses Verhalten hängt direkt mit dem Phänomen der Passivität zusammen bzw. der Wirkung, die der passive Zustand der Oberfläche der rostfreien Stähle seiner Struktur nach auf das Auftreten, den Grad und die Art der Korrosion ausübt. Der Verfasser hat diese Wirkung der Oberflächenstruktur in zahlreichen Versuchen untersucht, er hat Zusammensetzung und Vorbehandlung der Stähle verändert  -  durch Polieren, Warmbehandlung, Temperung, Sensibilisierung  - , die Exponierungszeiten und Oxydationsmittel verändert  -  durch Verwendung von kochender Salpetersäure, Chromsäure oder Salzsäure  -  und die Einwirkung der Korngröße auf die intergranulare Korrosion sowie den Effekt der Kaltverformung auf die Korrosionsfestigkeit der rostfreien Stähle untersucht. Er gibt im Artikel einen ausführlichen Bericht über alle diese Versuche und belegt die erhaltenen Resultate durch 22 Mikrophotographien und elektronenmikroskopischen Aufnahmen.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the Behavior of Metallic Zinc in PaintsWith the aid of a model element, some fundamental facts about the behaviour of zinc-based paint sprays on iron are explained. Investigations show that the corrosion inhibiting action of zinc-based paint sprays is, in the first place, dependent on the electrochemical interaction between the pigment and the iron base. Of material importance for a permanent protection, however, is the formation of not very easily soluble zinc compounds which reinforce the texture of the film. These reactions are, after cessation of the electrochemical protection, reinforced by superficial oxidation of the zinc.There is a fundamental distinction between galvanising and protection through zinc paint spraying.
    Notes: Es werden an Hand eines Modellelements einige grundlegende Tatsachen des Systems Zinkstaubanstrich/Eisenuntergrund erläutert.Untersuchungen zeigen, daß die korrosionshemmende Wirkung der Zinkstaubanstriche zunächst auf einer elektrochemischen Wechselwirkung zwischen dem Pigment und dem Eisenuntergrund beruht. Wesentlich jedoch für einen dauerhaften Schutz ist die Bildung schwerlöslicher, basischer Zinkverbindungen, die das Filmgefüge verfestigen. Diese Reaktionen werden auch nach dem Aufhören des elektrochemischen Schutzes unterstützt durch die oberflächliche Oxydation des Zinks.Es besteht ein grundsätzlicher Unterschied zwischen einer Verzinkung im üblichen Sinn und des durch einen Zinkstaubanstrich bewirkten Schutzes.

    Description / Table of Contents: On the causes and progress of aggression due to the attack of corrosive waters on cement mortar and concrete(First Communication)This First Communication presents a comparative synopsis of present knowledge and experience of the causes and progress of aggression, with special regard to recent developments, during the attack of corrosive waters on cement mortar and concrete, in as much as these are relevant to the causal relationship between cause and effect and to the processes during concrete corrosion in the mortar bed. This communication also deals with the different measures to enhance the corrosion resistence in concrete practice, and the influence of these measures on the concrete properties.

Mitteilung werden die bisherigen Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen über die Ursachen und den Verlauf der Aggression unter besonderer Berücksichtigung neuerer Entwicklungen bei Einwirkung angreifender Wässer auf Zementmörtel und Beton, soweit diese im Hinblick auf den kausalen Zusammenhang zwischen Ursache und Wirkung und die Vorgänge bei der Betonaggression im Mörtelbett wesentlich sind, vergleichend zusammengefaßt und die verschiedenen Maßnahmen zur Erhöhung der Aggressionsbeständigkeit in der Betonpraxis und deren Einfluß auf die Betoneigenschaften behandelt.

The object of the experiments was the investigation of the influence of KH2PO4, SnCl2, naphthoic acid, co-linolate and oleic acid on the corrosion and the corrosion rate of copper and brass Ms 70. In both cases, co-linolate and SnCl2act as inhibitors.

Als Inhibitoren wirken in beiden Fällen Co-Linoleat und SnCl2.

    Notes: A number of fluorinated polyesters have been prepared by condensing hexafluoropentanediol with one or more dibasic acid chlorides, and melting and glass transition temperatures and rates of crystallization have been determined, largely by means of volume dilatometry. The relation between [η] in chloroform at 30° and M̄n for hexafluoropentylene adipate (HFPA) was found to be [η] = 3.20 × 10-5 M̄n. The melting point Tm was found to increase from 34.5° to 104° as the isophthalate content in a series of adipate copolyesters increased from 0 to 100 mole-%. The glass transition Tg increases from -57° to -31° as isophthalate content increases from 0 to 50 mole-%. Tg is raised about 6° by the crosslinking of the polyesters. Rates of crystallization were determined for two HFPA samples with M̄n's of 13,000 and 19,500. Maxima in these rates occurred at about -13° and -15°, respectively. Respective t½ values for (linear) HFPA, vulcanized HFPA, and a copolyester containing 20 mole-% isophthalate are 48, 1140, and 27,200 min., respectively, at -10°. All the crystallization isotherms conform to Avrami's equation, (Vt - V∞)/(Vt - V∞) = exp {-αt″} for n = 6 over the initial stages of the process. At 1° both HFPA isotherms agree with the above equation over a large part of the process; however, as the isotherm temperature decreases, the equilibrium degree of crystallinity, as judged by the overall specific volume change, decreases and the isotherms diverge from Avrami's equation over progressively larger portions of the process. The product of the maximum rate of crystallization for each isotherm with either t½ or τi, the “induction time,” decreases with decreasing temperature, as would be expected in view of Avrami's equation. The value of 6 observed for n, a constant determined by the nucleation and growth mechanisms, is anomalous since only values of 1 to 4 are theoretically predictable. Values over the range of 1 to 4 have been observed experimentally by other workers for a variety of polymers.

    Notes: A study was made of the dilute solution properties and the molecular weight distribution of a polyurethane polymer prepared from polypropylene glycol 2025 and toluene-2,4-diisocyanate by a bulk polymerization under anhydrous conditions at 60°C. Such conditions were chosen to minimize possible side reactions which could produce branching. The polymer, which had a weight-average molecular weight of 36,500, was separated into fourteen fractions by fractional precipitation from a benzene solution with isooctane as precipitant. The fractions were characterized by light scattering measurements on methanol solutions and by dilute solution viscosities in methanol, benzene, and a theta-solvent. The molecular weight distribution of the unfractionated polymer and the relations between molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity in the various solvents were determined. Polymer configurations and interaction parameters are discussed.

    Notes: The reactivity of hydrofluorocarbon polymers toward organic amines increases, generally, with increasing fluorine content and with increasing basicity of the amine. The position of fluorine in the molecule with respect to hydrogen strongly affects the electrophylic character of the hydrogen atom. A discussion of the effects of neighboring groups on this reactivity is presented.

    Notes: The kinetics of the emulsion polymerization of methyl methacrylate have been examined in the light of recent advances in theory. It has been found that, if allowance is made for the decrease in the termination rate, the kinetics of the reaction can be predicted up to the point where all monomer is absorbed by growing monomer-polymer particles. In order to do this it must be assumed that the efficiency of initiation is low and is a function of the size and number of growing particles in the latex. A possible explanation for these observations is discussed.

    Notes: The thermal-oxidative degradation of films of poly(ethyl acrylate) about 35 μ thick were studied in the temperature range of 80 to 120°C. The degradation was followed by determining intrinsic viscosity changes, absorption of oxygen, and production of titratable acidity in the polymer. From viscosity results an apparent activation energy of 28.6 kcal. was calculated. Only very slight degradation occurred when the polymer was heated in a vacuum. In air, the reaction is inhibited by the presence of hydroquinone, while the addition of benzoyl peroxide caused a rapid degradation even in a vacuum. The rate of oxygen absorption was found to be similar to that typical of autocatalytic oxidations. Oxygen diffusion did not appear to be the rate-determining factor in the degradation of films 10 to 70 μ thick. The weight loss during degradation was very small, but infrared and mass spectra indicated the presence of carbon dioxide, ethanol, formic acid, and water among the volatile products. A degradation mechanism based on hydroperoxide formation and decomposition is suggested.

    Notes: A detailed analysis of the factors operating in polymer fractionation by gradient elution column methods is offered. A comparison between experimental fractionations of a range of polystyrenes indicates that the most important single factor is the concentration of polymer permitted in the eluant. For the logarithmic composition gradient considered here, the average concentration in the eluant may be controlled through control of the volume of the eluant in the mixing vessel. This volume should be not less than 200 times the volume of the polymer sample, and considerably larger if the polymer is of high molecular weight.
