Description / Table of Contents: The behaviour of malleable cast iron under the influence of corrosionWhite and black malleable cast iron is examined in regard to its behaviour in the presence of different inorganic and organic agents. The tests are designed for long-term laboratory observations and, in particular, for the determination of the corrosion behaviour under conditions which, as closely as possible, resemble those encountered in practice, Reactions to wet steam, combustion gases, etc. are discussed. The influence of pre-corrosion, e.g. caused by sulphuric acid, on tensile strength and strain is measured. In this connection, it has been possible to detect important relationships at the untreated and at the finished material. Particularly impressive is the relationship between fatigue impact strength and pre-corrosion, By way of comparison, measurements have also been carried out on grey cast iron, cast steel and steel. Finally, the influence of copper (up to about 3 per cent.) in different types of water is examined by a long-term test.
