Description / Table of Contents: Synthesis of Polycyclic AzulenesThe condensation of 6-dimethylamino-2-(dimethyliminiomethyl)fulvene perchlorate (2) with acidic three-carbon components, e. g. diethyl glutaconate (3c), leads to the formation of deeply coloured polyeneamines. These cyclize on heating with elimination of dimethylamine to yield azulenes substituted in the seven-membered ring. In an analogous manner from 2-methylchromone, 1-acenaphthenone, and fluorene with 2 the polycyclic compounds 7, 8, and 11, were prepared. The azulenoid hydrocarbon 15a, isomeric with 11, was synthesized from 1-acenaphthenone by the Ziegler-Hafner method. Quantum-chemical calculations on 11 and 15a were carried out by means of the semiempirical SCF LCAO MO + CI method.
