Notes:
This paper is intended to provide an experimentalist's contribution to a critical discussion of adsorption energies and their significance. The experimental requirements, with special reference to the limitations and the quality of the information provided by the various techniques are briefly reviewed. The significance of the measurements, and the background theoretical (phenomenological and model) schemes which experimentalists use for interpreting their results, are discussed in order to show that the interpretations of surface measurements must be carefully analyzed by theoreticians intending to contribute to an understanding of surface bonding.
