Description / Table of Contents: Preparation of the Oxide Nitrides VON, NbON, and TaON. The Crystal Structure of NbON and TaONCrystals of VON and NbON are formed by the thermal decomposition of the metal oxide amides, which can be synthesized from metal oxide trichloride and liquid ammonia. Single crystals of TaON are obtained by the reaction of TaOCl3 with NH4Cl in a quartz ampul at temperatures between 900 and 1000·C. NbON and TaON are isostructural with the Baddeleyite ZrO2. They crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/c with Z = 4.The existence of the nitride chloride Ta2N3Cl, whose hydrolysis should lead to TaON, and of NbNCl2 and TaNCl2 could not be confirmed. The unit cell dimensions of the compounds NH4MCl6 (M = Nb, Ta), (NH4)2NbCl6 and (NH4)2NbOCl5 have been determined.
