Abstract An alcohol dehydrogenase-deficient (ADH) mutant ofNicotiana plumbaginifolia, selected on the basis of ethanol resistance, was restored for ADH activity by transformation with anAdh gene fromArabidopsis thaliana expressed under the control of its own promoter or the CaMV 35S promoter. The expression in various organs (seed, root, leaf and pollen) was analysed at the protein and RNA levels as well as byin situ detection of ADH activity. The analysis of spatial and temporal regulation of theA. thaliana Adh gene expression suggests that ADH expression is controlled at the transcriptional level.
