Summary In rats and in humans the mononuclear cells of the blood cannot only be differentiated into various cell groups on a morphological basis, but also on a functional basis. The large and intermediate basophil mononuclear cells have a more intensive nucleic acid metabolism (DNA-3H-thymidine, RNA-3H-uridine) and a more rapid turn-over than monocytes, large lymphocytes with a light plasma, intermediate lymphocytes with a light plasma, small basophil lymphocytes and small lymphocytes with a light plasma. The lymphocytes of the rat may be divided into basophil lymphocytes with an average turn-over time of 20 days and into light lymphocytes with a turn-over time of 50–60 days. Large and smaller mononuclear cells with basophil cytoplasm do not show phagocytosis, while (in the rat) the large, intermediate and small light lymphocytes and monocytes are capable of intensive phagocytosis.
Notes:
