Summary Three methods are described and discussed. These are: static perimetry of the light-sense; skiaskotometry; and the method of flickerfusion frequencies. It is found that each is concerned with a specific set of variables and with a particular quality of the light-sense. The three methods are, therefore, not immediately comparable. Tests have been made with healthy specimens under similar conditions and also with a large number of cases of glaucoma. It appears that none of the methods is more sensitive than any other. Meanwhile, several practical reasons favour the method of static perimetry of the light-sense: - it can be applied to any location in the visual field: it can be refined to any desired degree by choosing sufficiently small spots; and it permits a suitable combination with topographical investigations. These advantages are helpful in recognising glaucoma at an early stage.
Abstract:
Résumé Les trois méthodes: périmétrie statique, skiascotométrie et détermination de la fréquence critique de fusion sont décrites et analysées. Il apparait que chacune d'elles comporte un nombre différent de variables et qu'elles s'adressent chacune à des caractères différents du sens lumineux. Les trois méthodes ne sont donc en principe pas comparables entre elles. Les examens ont été pratiqués d'abord dans des conditions identiques sur des sujets sains, puis sur un grand nombre de glaucomateux. On a pu conclure que la sensibilité des trois méthodes est identique. Toutefois, du point de vue pratique, la périmétrie statique semble la plus favorable: elle permet d'examiner n'importe quel point rétinien, elle peut être rendue particulièrement sensible par le choix de tests de plus en plus petits et elle peut être combinée utilement avec la méthode topographique. Tous ces avantages en font la méthode de choix pour le diagnostic précoce du glaucome.

Zusammenfassung Die 3 Methoden: statische Lichtsinnperimetrie, Skiaskotometrie und Verschmelzungsfrequenz werden zunächst beschrieben und analysiert. Dabei zeigt sich, dass sie mit einer verschiedenen Anzahl von Variablen arbeiten und verschiedene Qualitäten des Lichtsinns erfassen. Die 3 Methoden sind also an sich nicht vergleichbar. Zunächst wurden sie bei gesunden Personen unter gleichen Versuchsbedingungen durchgeführt, anschliessend bei einer grösseren Zahl von Glaukomkranken. Dabei erwies sich, dass keines der 3 Verfahren empfindlicher ist als das andere. Einstweilen sprechen mehrere praktische Momente für die Bevorzugung der statischen Lichtsinnperimetrie: sie ist an jeder Gesichtsfeldstelle durchführbar, sie kann durch Wahl kleinerer Marken beliebig verfeinert werden und sie erlaubt eine zweckmässige Verbindung mit der topographischen Untersuchungsweise. Alle diese Vorzüge wirken sich günstig auf die Früherkennung glaukomatöser Funktionsstörungen aus.
