We describe a device which monitors the intensity of a collimated monochromatic x-ray beam. A small ionization chamber, mounted between the collimator and the sample, is connected to a current integrator. It is constructed and operated in order to have a linear response. Technical details about electronics are given. Two diffractometers using synchrotron radiation from bending magnets are equipped with this device, with the main purpose of rescaling diffraction data from macromolecular crystals.
