Notes: Collagen sponge, reconstituted from bovine tendon, provides a porous matrix for the permeation of fibroblasts and capillaries and on theoretical grounds it should be ideal for stimulating granulation tissue in deep leg ulcers. A preliminary study in six patients has suggested that a collagen sponge dressing enhanced granulation, but subsequent re-epithelialization over the reconstituted collagen tended to be slower than usual.
