Notes:
Microbiological production of beta-carotene previously investigated in shakenflask culture has been scaled-up to 20-liter fermentors containing an operating volume of 10-liters. Yields obtained in shaken flasks, approximately 100 mg./100 ml. have been reproduced with a fermentation time of 72 hr. Factors affecting the fermentation: inoculum, mash ingredients, and environmental conditions, were investigated. Typical data are presented. A preliminary cost analysis indicates a “cost to make” of $31.35/kg. of carotene contained in the dried fermentation solids.
