Description / Table of Contents: The corrosion effect of aqueous cement extractions on steelThe corrosion resistance of steel embedded in concrete is based On the fact that concrete, because of its calcium hydroxide content, has an alkaline reaction so that the steel is passivated. But since many simple electrolytes are apt to counteract passivity, and since concrete often contains gypsum, investigations have been carried out into the behaviour of steel in calcium hydroxide solutions containing calcium sulphate, These tests revealed a very high rate of local steel corrosion, amounting to a maximum of about 10 micrometres per day. The highly electropositive potential of steel in pure calcium hydroxide solutions is therefore, by addition of calcium sulphate, markedly shifted towards the negative side. The possible effects of such corrosion on the practical behaviour of steel in concrete are discussed.
