Description / Table of Contents:
Electro-chemical characteristics of atmospheric corrosionOn the strength of published data, some essential characteristics of atmospheric corrosion are investigated, First, the part played by water adsorption is discussed and the influence on the emergence of corrosive electrolytes of impurities in the air and on the metal surface explained. On the basis of the electrode-kinetic conditions, the author then deals - especially for iron and steel, but with some comments on copper and zinc - with the mechanism and stages which govern the corrosion rate of uniform corrosion consisting of hydrogen segregation, oxygen reduction, and sulphur dioxide reduction. In connection with the question of non-uniform corrosion, especially of those metals affected by oxide films, the conditions for the appearance of the different types of differential aeration cells are discussed.
Notes:
