Notizen:
Composition by weight and volume of a cellular material and how it changes with density is shown in the form of equations. The equations are used to derive the basic relationship between cell size, cell wall thickness, density of cellular material and density of solid and gaseous components. A simplified equation is presented for thermal conductivity of low density cellular materials. It is used to illustrate the contribution of the solid and gaseous components in cellular polystyrene and urethane at various densities. The contribution of factors other than conduction to observed thermal conductivity of cellular polystyrene is compared to that reported for fiber glass insulation. The observed effect of cell size on conductivity is presented and compared to the calculated effect, based on an equation in the literature.
