Description / Table of Contents: A New Indolizine Synthesis with 2-Acylpyridines, II. Blue AzacyaninesHeating of 2-cinnamoylpyridines 1, with ammonium acetate in glacial acetic acid in the presence of air yields blue dyes, which are isolated as crystalline salts when part of the ammonium acetate is replaced by ammonium perchlorate, bromide or iodide.  -  Cleavage of these dyes by 70% perchloric acid yields the 1-oxo-2.3-dihydro-1H-indolizinium perchlorate 11, the 1-oxo-1H-indolizinium perchlorate 12, and ammonia. This result together with the n.m.r. spectra proves the blue dyes to be azacyanines 8, 9, and 10.
