Important issues face the use of advanced materials in medical applications. It is now possible to replace or augment many tissues and parts of the body by implanted devices, but there are still sever limitations to functions they are able to perform and problems associated with their compatibility with the tissues. Biomaterials of the future need to simulate more closely the tissues are replacing and both the current position and future outlook are reviewed in this light.
