Notes:
It is suggested that the conducting transmembrane channels formed by the linear gramicidins A, B and C may be head-to-head (formyl end-to-formyl end) dimers of double-stranded parallel β-helices. This possibility is not in conflict with any of the various experimental findings bearing on the molecular organization of the channels and represents a plausible alternative to Urry's model of a head-to-head dimer of single-stranded β6.3-helices.
