Notizen: An analysis is presented for the stability of an initial and boundary value difference scheme arising from the solution of a two-dimensional hyperbolic equation by the Lax-Wendroff method. The positive and negative characteristic speeds of the linear equation are not necessarily equal in magnitude. Supplementary boundary conditions required for the finite difference solution are obtained using extrapolation for a linear combination of the dependent variables. The analysis produces stability intervals for the parameter which describes this linear combination of variables. Numerical experiments are described which support the theoretical analysis.
