Notes: An investigation into the kinetics and the mechanism of thermal and oxidative decomposition of polyvinyl chloride is reported. The rate of HCl evolution was measured in streams of nitrogen, air, and oxygen. The reaction is described as a chain reaction involving initiation (thermal and oxidative), propagation, and termination (spontaneous and oxidative). A Kinetic scheme is given representing the rate of HCl evolution as a function of the reaction constants of the step reactions. The results indicate that thermal decomposition starts at the end groups of the macromolecules, whereas oxygen initiates decomposition within the chain.
