Conclusions Tests on articles made from stabilized zirconia in the roof of an open-hearth furnace working by the basic process and combined use of oxygen, showed that their wear resistance is a half that of normally used periclase-spinel brick. Comparative testing in the roofs of open-hearth furnaces of periclase-spinel products with flame-sprayed coatings of ZrO2 and Al2O3 indicated that the applied layer has no effect on the wear resistance of these refractories.
