Abstract The results are examined of investigations into the effect of the grain size and the type of crystal lattice of polycrystalline material on the yield limit in a multiaxial stress state and the form of the limiting yield curve of carbon steels. Reasons for the transformation of the yielding surface of these materials with temperature variation are examined. A yielding criterion of polycrystalline materials with fcc and bcc lattices is proposed and experimentally justified.
