Description / Table of Contents: Summary The results of an inquiry, started in cooperation with Dr.P. V. Vail (formerly IAEA) and completed by the present authors are reported upon, dealing with the experimental and field use of insectpathogenic viruses in Europe except most eastern European countries. For the 42 examples listed details are given concerning (in the sequence of the headline in table 1): pest insect species, virus type, its origin, propagated on(host) in(country), investigations on safety and other side-effects, črop, size of area treated, virus dosage or concentration, amount of water, technique of application, instars treated, efficacy, remarks. Cooperating researchers (name of correspondent underlined), country⋗ The field experiments comprise 17 species of Lepidoptera, 1 Diptera, 1 Hymenoptera, and were carried out in 13 countries. The addresses of correspondents are listed in order to facilitate further contacts. Several tests carried out by the same researcher have been somewhat condensed into one line because of space limitation. — The examples reported refer to NPV 29 times, to GV 12 times, and to TIV once. Thus except the last example, all activities have been limited to baculoviruses. Safety tests only commenced, particularly withMamestra brassicae NPV,Neodiprion sertifer NPV, andLaspeyresia pomonella GV. The practical importance of virus use against pest insects is yet small in Europe. Only the following examples concern treated areas of more than 50 hectars: Nos. 15, 16, 36, 39, 42. The only virus preparation commecially produced is made in Finland and based on NPV ofN. sertifer.
