Summary Gastric hypersecretion following small-bowel resection in man has previously only received brief mention. This paper is a case report of a man who, following a massive bowel resection for mesenteric emboli, required repeated gastric aspiration and was shown to have gastric hypersecretion with a daily volume of 2–4 L. containing 200–500 mEq. of hydrogen ion. This hypersecretion resulted in gross biochemical abnormalities which, along with their phase of correction, were studied in detail. Possible mechanisms for this hypersecretion are discussed.
