Abstract While the economy stabilizes during the current transitional period, it is especially important for Russian manufacturers of rolled products to begin to make their own products for sale in the domestic and foreign markets. As is known, the increasingly stiff competition in the marketplace is making the efficient production of quality rolled products all the more important. The manufacturer must thus deal with the issue of using the tools that are optimum from a technical (surface quality and stability of the product dimensions, flatness, and profile) and economic standpoint—rolling-mill rolls. Many domestic manufacturers, dissatisfied with the differences between the existing standards for rolls in Russia and in neighboring countries, are looking to the roll-manufacturing expertise that Western companies have gained in collaborations with manufacturers of rolled products and are considering either purchasing those companies's rolls or producing them directly at their own factories.
