Summary Guinea-pigs were intravenously injected with suspensions of blue ultramarine and the alveolar macrophages as well as the peritoneal inflammatory phagocytes were analysed with regard to their content of ultramarine particles. In the same way homologous peritoneal macrophages, labelled extracorporally with ultramarine, were intraveneously applied. The results show that phagocytes emigrate from the blood-stream into the alveoli which play a part in the cellular cleaning mechanism of the lungs. The lungs are thus an essential secretory organ of particles phagocytosed at any site in the organism.

Zusammenfassung Meerschweinchen wurden i.v. mit Ultramarinblaususpensionen injiziert und die Alveolarmakrophagen wie die Peritonealreizphagocyten auf ihren Gehalt an Ultramarinteilchen untersucht. In gleicher Weise wurden extrakorporal mit Ultramarin markierte homologe Peritonealmakrophagen i.v. appliziert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, daß aus dem Blutstrom Phagocyten in die Alveolen einwandern, die einen Anteil am cellulären Reinigungsmechanismus der Lunge haben. Die Lunge ist somit ein wesentliches Ausscheidungsorgan von an beliebiger Stelle im Organismus phagocytierten Partikeln.
