Contents The reasons are given why electromagnetic waves in the frequency region from about 0.1 THz up to about 10 THz can do some jobs caused by the physical situation of the terrestrial atmosphere and why some others near ground not. In order to introduce into the following papers the known solutions for system realizations are reviewed without details. The discussions of the Sindelfingen ITG-workshop on May 28, 1993 about challenges in the future and strategies for solutions are summarized.

Übersicht Es wird begründet, weshalb elektromagnetische Wellen im Frequenzbereich von etwa 0,1 THz bis rund 10 THz aufgrund der physikalischen Situation der terrestrischen Atmosphäre bestimmte Aufgaben erfüllen können und weshalb andere in Bodennähe nicht. Zur Einführung in die nachfolgenden Beiträge werden die heute bekannten Systemlösungen summarisch skizziert. Die Diskussionen auf der Sindelfinger ITG-Sitzung am 28. 5. 1993 über Herausforderungen und Lösungsstrategien der Zukunft werden zusammenfassend wiedergegeben.
