Notes: Summary The effects of the oral antidiabetic therapeutic N-(4-methyl-benzenesulfonyl)-N-butylurea (D 860, “Artosin”, “Rastinon”) on polysynaptic reflexes of the spinal cord and on the indirectly stimulated muscles of decerebrated, decapitized, and despinalized cats have been investigated. It was found that 1. Doses of 300–500 mg./kg. of D 860 paralyse the polysynaptic reflexes; with the method of the isolated perfused extremity it was shown that this paralysis is due to a direct action of D 860 on the spinal cord. 2. Higher doses (about 720 mg./kg.) of D 860 finally decrease the contractions of the indirectly stimulated muscle. The result of the direct muscle stimulation is unchanged. 3. The reflex depression was independent of the blood sugar level, which did not sink under critical values of 60 mg.-%. 4. After an extrem poisoning of D 860, animals finally died by a paralysis of the respiration and/or circulation centres in the medulla.
