Summary The magnitude and the direction of the blood flow in the vessels connecting bronchial and pulmonary circulation in a lung lobe were determined on anesthetized open chest dogs. By the simultaneous use of volumetric measurement and Cr51 labelled erythrocytes determinations we were able to quantitate concommittantly occuring inflow and outflow. The vascular system of the lung lobe was perfused artificially while the broncho-pulmonary communicating vessels between this lobe and the systemic circulation of the experimental dog were left intact. Retrograde perfusion (i.e. from V. pulmonalis to A. pulmonalis) of the experimental lobe was also used. Our results show that in addition to the blood inflow from the bronchial system to the pulmonary system of the lobe there is also an outflow of blood from this lobe, specially with increased pulmonary capillary and venous pressures. The resistence of the vessels responsible for the outflow from the lobe was estimated to be about one half of the resistance of the vessels responsible for inflow into the lobe. Attempts to divide the global inflow into a pre- and postcapillary inflow (according to the measured hemodynamic parameters) indicate that in the majority of the cases most of the inflow empties in the venous side. This does not contradict previous experiments showing that a small part of the inflow is postcapillary. These findings can be explained if one admits that a relatively greater part of the inflow empties in the pulmonary capillaries. From the pulmonary vascular system the blood flows out apparently as well through veno-venous anastomoses as through connections between the capillary beds of the lung and of the bronchial system.
