Summary With the exception of ragweed antigen E all attempts to purify pollen allergens have been unsuccessful. Quantitations of allergens are conventionally based on parameters devoid of any relevance to allergenicity in vivo (e. g., Noon — units, w/v etc.). RABS (The Reference Allergen Bioassay Standardization) is carried out in isolated guinea pig mast cells and gives relative allergenicities compared to a standard allergen (Human serum albumin). RABS standardized rye pollen extracts were tested in the course of routine diagnostics in patients: the results of RABS standardization and the results of skin tests were found to agree very well.
