Description / Table of Contents: Summary In spite of the enlightenment and legal regulation of post-mortem examinations up to this day it is asserted occasionly that someone seems to lie seemingly dead in the coffin after the coroner's inquest. Thus only recently some people had “perceived” noises and groaning from the coffin and, alarming the press and calling for the coroner, raised heaviest reproaches against him. The extensive destruction of skin by rats, lacking reaction, proved that the 86-years old man was dead already before the post-mortem examination. It is to be suspected that the noises from the loft of the mortuary were caused by cats. After the forensic autopsy the rumors were silenced and the reputation of the physician was re-established.
