Zusammenfassung Bei einem Frühgeborenen mit den charakteristischen Zeichen einer konnatalen Cytomegalie konnte am 5. Lebenstag aus Stuhl und Urin ein Adenovirus Typ 3 isoliert werden. Postmortal züchteten wir das gleiche Virus aus Gehirn-, Leber- und Nierengewebe. Die histologische Untersuchung ergab für die Cytomegalie typische cytomegale Zellen mit intranucleären Einschlußkörpern in der Lunge, den Nieren, dem Pankreas, der Leber, den Speicheldrüsen und im Gehirn. Bei dem Patienten bestand demnach eine Doppelinfektion mit einem Cytomegalie- und einem Adenovirus Type 3. Beide Infektionen lagen in einer generalisierten Form vor.

Abstract Adenovirus type 3 could be isolated from a premature infant showing the characteristic clinical symptoms of a cytomegalovirus infection. The adenovirus was isolated from the urine and the faeces, collected on the fith day after birth, and from tissues taken from brain, liver and kidneys at autopsy. The histological examination revealed typical cytomegalic intranuclear inclusion-bearing cells in the lungs, kidneys, pancreas, liver, salivary gland and brain, which is typical of a cytomegalovirus infection. The patient therefore died from a dual infection with adenovirus type 3 and cytomegalovirus. Both were generalized infections.
