Summary Cytoplasmic granulo-fibrillar masses, usually termed nucleolus-like bodies (NLB) or nuages, have been described in several different cell types. They are sometimes associated with a mitochondrial arrangement, this association often being marked during certain phases of the oocyte cycle. In Xiphophorus helleri, NLB consist of fibrillar and granular material that gradually becomes more granular during meiotic prophase I, and is associated with mitochondrial arrangements during diplotene and dictyate of meiosis. Autoradiographic studies of uridine incorporation into the nucleolus and subsequently into NLB suggest that the latter represent a reserve of ribonucleoproteins that is later used in ribosomal maturation during vitellogenesis.
