Notes: Summary 1. Controversial problems in the histological study of the glomerular epi thelium have been reviewed in the light of observations made on the kidney of the rat with a new technique of silver impregnation. The new technique gives an elective stain of the glomerular epithelial cells („Deckzellen“). 2. The perinuclear cytoplasm (cell body) of the epithelial cells extends into long processes (stem, main branches) which ramify upon and between the glomerular capillaries and form an investment of regularly spaced ring-like filaments (annular arborisation) upon the capillary endothelium. 3. Further branching of the annular arborisation, leading to the formation of filaments which diminish in calibre to the limit of resolution by the light microscope, has been observed upon the capillary endothelium. 4. The term ‘dendrite’ is proposed for the entire branching process of a glomerular epithelial cell. 5. Photographic evidence is provided which confirms and extends the observations of v. Möllendorff (1927) and Bargmann (1929) and supports the analysis of the glomerular epithelium made by these authors against the criticism of Zimmermann (1933). 6. A modification of the silver technique reveals the presence of large Golgiapparatus in the cell bodies of the glomerular epithelial cells.
