Abstract We outline a formal treatment ofn- $$\bar n$$ oscillations in a large nucleus using many-body techniques. The usual optical potential treatments of previous authors are recovered as particular cases. Several shortcomings are pointed out, which cast doubts on the reliability of detailed dynamical calculations at present. In spite of that, a simple argument based upon the “quantum Zeno effect” yields a semiquantitative, albeit rather useful, estimate connecting the period forn- $$\bar n$$ oscillations in free space and the lifetime for nuclear instability due to the above process in the nucleus. The last result is supported by a detailed analysis à la Weisskopf-Wigner of the oscillation and annihilation amplitudes in a simplified model.
