Summary In the period 1956–1963 all cases of infectious diseases of the central nervous system coming to attention in the area of Neunkirchen, in which tick-borne encephalitis is endemic, were thoroughly investigated in order to determine the morbidity due to this encephalitis. Furthermore, the sera of 1412 persons were tested for neutralizing antibodies. Fourteen per cent of the population proved to he infected, but only 8.2 per cent of the infected persons (aged from 0 to 60 years) came down with manifest disease.

Zusammenfassung Von 1956 bis 1963 wurden im Endemiegebiet Neunkirchen alle Fälle von Infektionskrankheiten des ZNS untersucht, um die Morbidität an FSME genau bestimmen zu können. Außerdem wurden die Sera von 1412 Personen auf Gehalt an NT-Antikörpern untersucht, um die Durchseuchung mit FSME-Virus zu ermitteln. Auf Grund des Verhältnisses von Morbidität und Durchseuchung (14%) ließ sich ein Kontagionsindex von 8,2% für die Altersgruppen 0 bis 60 Jahre errechnen.
