Notes: Interaction-induced infrared (IR) absorption bands for H2 dissolved in liquid water at room temperature are reported for the first time. The Q1(1) absorption band present in aqueous solution is compared to those observed for the same gas dissolved in CCl4 and in mixtures of CCl4 with acetonitrile. The analysis of the observed bands together with available information about the effect of electric fields on the integrated absorption of this normally forbidden band give an estimated maximum value for the local electric field on the solute molecule due to the solvent dipole moment. The results suggest that the electric field-induced dipole on H2 dissolved in water is very small compared to that induced in low density H2–H2O gaseous mixtures.
