Notes: Far-infrared absorption spectra of methane molecule diluted in condensed argon, krypton, and xenon matrices have been obtained at 4.2 K under high pressures. It was found that in the CH4–Ar system the vibrational absorption band grew and its peak position showed a blue shift as the applied pressure increased. On the other hand, the rotational absorption bands in the CH4–Xe and the CH4–Kr systems showed a red shift. The different responses of the rotational absorption band and the vibrational band to the applied pressure are discussed in relation to the induction mechanism of the dipole moment in the molecule.
