A sensitive system has been developed to measure the evolution rate of the photosynthetic oxygen produced by cyanobacteria. The system was built around a Clark oxygen probe. The circuit diagram of the polarizing voltage unit and amplifier, methods for calibration, and the flow chart of the computer program are given. The circuitry of the amplifier allows sensitivity up to 0.072 nmole/ml/mm as compared to 0.31 nmole/ml/mm of commercially available oxygraphs. Oxygen evolution rates of four different strains of cyanobacteria are reported. The system was tested for cultures having chla range between 2.75 and 0.0275 μg/ml with an O2 rate of 239 μmole O2 mg chla−1 h−1.
