Notes: The position response of blade monitors is mainly determined by their spectral sensitivity for low energy photoelectrons. For insertion devices with high energy first harmonics, the signals are contaminated by the light from the upstream and downstream bending magnets. A blade monitor design using energy selective detection of the photoelectrons from the blades will be presented. This way the background signals from the dipoles can be supressed and only position information from the insertion device beam can be obtained. A simulation code and experimental results at BESSY I will be presented. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Calculable synchrotron radiation (SR) from BESSY dipole magnets has been used by PTB for radiometry from the visible to the soft x-ray region with very low uncertainties for many years. The use of wavelength shifter (WLS) radiation bears the potential of extending the usable spectral range for radiometry with calculable SR to higher photon energies. Initial investigations on the feasibility of this approach have been performed: an energy dispersive high-purity germanium detector (HPGe) was used to characterize the radiation of the new BESSY WLS with a magnetic field of B=3.2 T. The HPGe detector has previously been calibrated and so the absolute spectral photon flux could be determined. The measured spectral photon flux was then compared to calculations and good agreement was found in the order of ±5%. Although this is to our knowledge the best agreement demonstrated so far for an absolute comparison of measured WLS radiation to calculations, further improvements are needed for a future radiometric use of WLS radiation. This will be discussed. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The dopamine β-hydroxylase (DβH) content and activity of large dense-core noradrenergic vesicles purified from bovine splenic nerve were determined using two assay procedures : enzymic activity expressed in Units per mg protein and homospecific activity based on radioimmunoassay expressed in Units per mg DβH antigen. Approximately two-thirds of the total enzyme activity is latent in these vesicles, even after various treatments designed to compromise vesicle integrity. DβH can be completely unmasked by brief treatment with 0.01-0.05% Triton X-100 and activity increases from 0.20 to 0.64 Units per mg vesicle protein. Calculations based on both assay methods suggested that an average of 7% (range 3-15%) of the total vesicle protein was DβH and that the average vesicle contained about 4 molecules of enzyme (range 2-9 molecules). The estimated homospecific activities indicated an average of 25 and 50% (range 18-72%) of the vesicle enzyme was inactive in the various samples using the two antibodies. The vesicle can synthesize up to 30 molecules of noradrenaline/s per molecule of DβH at near optimal substrate concentration, and 60-270 molecules of norepinephrine/s per vesicle. The assumptions used in the various calculations were critically analyzed and, based on the methods employed, it is tentatively considered to be unlikely that there could be more than 5-12 molecules of DβH per vesicle. The possibility that circulating DβH originates primarily, if not exclusively, from the large dense-core vesicle type is considered and the functional implications of the data support the concept of vesicle reuse during several cycles of exocytosis involving a quantal size equal to a fraction of the vesicle transmitter content.

Notes: In the shoreline management plan for the coast of North Norfolk (England), managed retreat has been identified as the most preferable option for the Cley Marshes nature reserve. In general, arguments in favour of managed retreat are (i) opportunities for nature restoration and development, (ii) economic efficiency, and (iii) enhanced resilience to environmental stress and shock. However, with respect to the Cley reserve, recent floods have shown that increased salinity is likely to decrease its natural value, while this study shows that the economic-efficiency criterion is not valid either. This paper discusses the application of contingent valuation and travel-cost methods on data collected by interviews of 160 visitors to the reserve, which has provided estimates of the annual recreational value of the site.

Notes: We present a density functional approach for inhomogeneous charge-stabilized colloidal suspensions which is based on the hybrid weighted-density approximation. Making use of an analytic expression recently proposed for the free energy of the homogeneous system, a free energy functional for the inhomogeneous fluid can be found that is particularly easy to evaluate numericalLY because of the explicit nature of its input functions. Due to this numerical efficiency our calculation can be extended to relatively large three dimensional systems. After performing various explicit tests of our model we consider the case of two large hard spheres immersed in the suspension and calculate from the 3D density distribution of the fluid the effective pair potential between the spheres. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: At the BESSY II storage ring, the Physikalisch–Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) will operate insertion devices dedicated to radiometric use. One branch of the appendant beamline system will be equipped with a grazing-incidence monochromator, described here. The monochromator concept is based on a plane grating operated in parallel light; therefore exact focusing is maintained for all photon energies irrespective of the angular setting at the grating. The monochromator has been optimized for small higher-order transmittance and high power throughput, as required by radiometric applications in the wide photon energy range from 20 eV to 1900 eV.

Notes: The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) will operate an electromagnetic undulator designed for radiometry at the BESSY II storage ring. The undulator has a period length of 180 mm, 21 full periods and a maximum magnetic induction of 0.46 T, resulting in a tuning range of the first harmonic from 5 to 150 eV at 1.7 GeV electron energy. Moreover, the electromagnetic design allows the undulator to be operated in a special mode with the period length doubled to 360 mm, thus accordingly shifting the tuning range to lower energies. The main design parameters of the undulator for radiometric applications, as well as measured magnetic field data, are presented.
