Notes: Neutron diffraction experiments have been completed on 243AmO2 and 244Cm2O3. The coherent-scattering amplitude of 243Am, relative to a value of 0.58 × 10-12 for oxygen, is 0.76 (1) × 10-12 cm. The value for curium is ̃0.7 × 10-12 cm, which cannot be determined accurately in this experiment because both C-type (cubic, a = 11.0 Å) and A-type (hexagonal, isostructural with La2O3) Cm2O3 are present in the sample. Some of the difficulties in performing neutron diffraction experiments on these radioactive isotopes, which exhibit self-heating and spontaneous fission, are discussed briefly.

Notes: A neutron diffraction study of deuterated potassium ferrocyanide trihydrate (KFCT) has been made above the ferroelectric Curie temperature. The monoclinic form, space group A2/a (No. 15), has a = 9.42, b = 17.01, c = 9.38 Å, and β= 90.03° at 20°C. Since all of the large crystals of KFCT were twinned by a 90° rotation about the b axis, data from both overlapped and nonoverlapped reflections were used in the determination of the structure. Refinement by a modified least-squares method that accounted for the overlapped data led to a weighted R value on F2 (3678 reflections) of 4.8%. The corresponding R on F is 4.9%. The disordered water molecules are of two types: one is disordered into two positions related by a twofold axis parallel to b: the other is disordered into two positions that are related by an approximate 90° rotation in the plane of the molecule. Both types of water molecules show O–D ...O or O–D...N bonding. The Fe(CN)4−6 octahedra are regular and the potassium ions are loosely surrounded by O and N atoms. This analysis has elucidated the role of the water molecules in the ferroelectric switching mechanism. The [{\bar 1}01] ferroelectric axis in this crystal can be explained on the basis of the dipole moment and orientation of the water molecule dipoles.

Notes: The cryo-orienter is used for neutron diffraction studies of single crystals between liquid helium and room temperatures. It combines a double Dewar cryostat with a three-circle goniostat. The temperature of the crystal is controlled by a combination of exchange gas and a bridge circuit to a stability of ±0.01 Kelvin degree. A ring assembly allows the cryostat to be angularly displaced ±50° from vertical (χ), and to be rotated 360° (φ), which provides crystal motion about two axes with ±0.01° precision. The ring assembly can be rotated about the diffraction vector. Crystals can be mounted along a non-major zone and sufficient data can then be collected with one crystal mounting. The ARCADE computer system controls the entire data collection.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Peripheral blood leucocytes from patients with infectious mononucleosis were cultured and observed during a 24 hour period. In this study are described only the large cells having wide plasma. In the beginning of cultures there are many infectious mononucleosis cells. The nucleus shows a coarse chromatin network. The basophilic plasma has a clear paranuclear zone. Some of them are synthesising DNA. But the most infectious mononucleosis cells transform into cells of the same size with clear plasma. First there are transitional forms, which increase until the 6. hour of culture. Their plasma is weakly basophilic. They transform into clear cells with light plasma often showing red granules. The nucleus shows a rather structureless chromatin. These cells die in the later course of culture. Alle three celltypes described show a strong acid phosphatase activity. The incorporation of3H-Uridine is high in the basophilic cells and decrease as the plasmabasophilia diminishes.

Notes: Summary The distribution of 5′-nucleotidase (5′-Nase) activity is studied in esophagi of swiss mice during the following stages of the development: 14th to 18th day of gestation, newborn, 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th, 14th, 21st, and 29th day after birth, adult animals. Both light microscopical and electron microscopical methods are used. Biochemical measurements of 5′-Nase levels in esophagi of newborn and adult animals are carried out to confirm the histochemical findings. In the light microscope 5′-Nase activity is found regularly in smooth muscle cells and precursors of smooth muscle cells. The reaction product can be demonstrated in the region of the developing lamina muscularis mucosae for the first time at the 15th day of gestation. The striated muscle cells show no 5′-Nase reaction. In the basal portions of the esophageal epithelium 5′-Nase activity can be detected between the 15th day of gestation and the 29th day post partum. The maximum reaction is found during the first week after birth. In the esophageal epithelium of adult animals no 5′-Nase activity can be visualized. In the electron microscope the reaction products are found restricted to the cell membranes of epithelial cells and smooth muscle cells. Biochemical data indicate that the 5′-Nase activity per gramme protein in the esophagus of newborn animals is about 15 times higher than in the adult esophagus. These findings give strong evidence against a reverse correlation between 5′-Nase levels and proliferation capacities of tissues, which is generally assumed in the literature.

Notes: In a search for a new and efficient synthesis of the compound 7, the cyclization of 5 (obtained by a Michael-reaction from 3 and 4) was studied. Treatment of 5 with strong acid furnished the known dienedione 8. Mild acidic conditions gave the bridged alcohol 9 and other, unidentified products, rather than the desired enone 6. Under basic conditions, 5 did not cyclize to 6, but underwent retro-Michael reaction. Attempts were then made to convert the dienedione 8 to the 14α-enone 19. However, both catalytic hydrogenation and lithium-ammonia reduction of 8 yielded mainly 14β-products. In some hydrogenation experiments, isomerization of the dienedione 8 to the phenols 13 (major) and 14 (minor) occurred. The stereochemistry of the new isomeric des-A-androst-9-en-5, 17-diones (16, 17 and 20) was determined by chemical and spectroscopic methods.
