Notes: Abstract The production of fermium isotopes was attempted by complete fusion of different targets and projectiles spanning a wide range of effective entrance channel fissilities below and above the predicted threshold valuex eff thr ≃0.7. For the most asymmetric systems where fusion is expected to occur without dynamical hindrance we investigate to what extent the expected amount of sub-barrier fusion contributes to the production of fermium evaporation residues. For increasingly symmetric systems the experimental fusion barriers are found to exceed the fusion barriers predicted by the proximity formalism. The barrier heights are discussed in the framework of both the extra-push model and the surface friction model.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Der Prozeß der Waschhautbildung ist abhängig von der Wasserzeit.
Notes: Summary The development of washerwoman's hands depends upon the length of submersion. Until now there have been no results published on the qualitative and quantitative time-related changes with regard to washerwoman's hands. The fingertips of 50 hands from 35 corpses were qualitatively examined at early postmortem (1–4 h after death). The quantitative investigations were confined to the tips of the middle fingers. Submersion of the hands in water at 37°C was interrupted at intervals of 10 min, 30 min, 60 min, 2 h, 3 h, 4 h, 6 h, 10 h and 24 h for a period of 30s-1 min. The width of three adjoining ridges of the skin were measured in three defined areas of the middle fingertips and photographs were taken. Quantitative results: No relevant differences were seen in the changes of the width of the skin ridges between the right and left hand after submersion in water; there was no specific difference between the sexes. During the soaking process the skin ridges influence each other. The age of the individual corpse has no influence on the change in width of the skin ridges. Concerning the qualitative test results, six time-limited stages could be classified: stage I: physiological dry state; stage II: softened state; stage III: swollen and compressed state; stage IV: partial wrinkle covering; stage V: epidermal lysis; stage VI: loss of relief outlines.

Notes: Summary According to pediatric statements, falls from a standing position may cause skull fractures in infants without specific symptoms. Nearly every infant has at some time fallen from the changing table or the baby carriage, etc. From the forensic aspect it is the duty of experts to discuss the “battered child syndrome.” Evidence given by the defendants concerning the height of the fall are unreliable. Experimental test series concerned with the stumbling height (82 cm in free fall) and three various types of floor—stone, carpet, and foam-backed linoleum—were carried out. In each case skull fractures were seen. In three cases the fractures crossed the sutures. Conclusions: (1) Each fall of an infant from the height of a table may cause a skull fracture, which may lead to death; (2) when child mishandling is suspected, all circumstances must be taken into consideration.

Notes: Abstract The fracture properties of several nuclear-waste glasses were determined by indentation techniques. The fracture toughness,K Ic, was calculated from the measurement of radial cracks around Vickers diamond indentations as a function of applied load, and the results agree quite satisfactorily with values obtained by the Hertzian indentation technique. The fracture toughness of the waste glasses containing simulated fission products ranged from 0.9 to 1.1 MN m−3/2 in air, with slightly higher values measured in dry nitrogen. The hardness was also obtained from the Vickers indentations and the ratioH/E was determined from the elastic recovery of Knoop diamond indentations. The values ofE deduced fromH andH/E were within 15% of values measured by ultrasonic tests. The results along with the limitations of the different techniques are discussed in detail.

Notes: Summary In autogamous species the optimum number of families is calculated for a selection program in two stages conducted in segregating generations. The influence of epistasis is not large. In case of much epistasis the number of families at the first stage must be reduced. In comparison with selection in later generations the second stage is relatively important. Two stage selection is more efficient than combined selection.

Description / Table of Contents: Chelates of 8-Quinolinol Derivatives. IV. Properties, Adduct Formation, and Extraction of Nickel(II) Chelates with n-Alkyl-8-quinolinols Containing Long Chain SubstituentsThe nickel(II) chelates of 5- and 7-nonyl-, 5- and 7-decyl- and 5-chlor-7-decyl-8-quinolinol as well as adducts with water and ammonia were synthesized and characterized by spectra and magnetic moments. The existence of associated forms was concluded. To characterize the influence of substituents the stability and composition of pyridine adducts in solution were determined. Finally the extraction of nickel(II) was studied, and a comparison of extraction data with acid and coordination stability constants was made in the case of the isomeric nonyl-8-quinolinols.
