Notes: Abstract Ceramic samples obtained by hot pressing from a mixture of Al2O3 with admixtures of 23 vol.% TiC powder and 30.9 vol.% SiC whisker crystals are investigated experimentally. The resistivity of the material is measured at temperatures of 4.2–300 K, the infrared reflection spectra are recorded in the region 400–4200 cm–1, and the temperature dependence of the Young’s modulus is investigated at temperatures up to 1300 K. As a result it is it is shown that the conductivity and optical reflection of the high-strength composite have a semimetallic character, which is due to the titanium carbide particles contained in it.

Notes: Superconducting properties of the cuprate superconductors depend on the oxygen content of the material; the diffusion of oxygen is thus an important process in the fabrication and application of these materials. In the present article, we review studies of the diffusion of oxygen in La2−xSrxCuO4, YBa2Cu3O7−δ, YBa2Cu4O8, and the Bi2Sr2Can−1CunO2n+4 (n=1 or 2) superconductors, and attempt to elucidate the atomic mechanisms responsible.

Notes: Tracer diffusion of Ag in the c direction of single crystal Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox (2212), and in dense polycrystalline Bi2Sr2CuOx (2201) and (Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox (2223) has been investigated. Concentration profiles were measured by secondary-ion mass spectrometry and by a radiotracer serial-sectioning technique for the single and polycrystals, respectively. The diffusion coefficients of Ag in the c direction of 2212 at 500 and 600 °C at one atmosphere of oxygen are approximately four orders of magnitude smaller than those previously measured in 2212 polycrystals by [Y. Fang, S. Danyluk, K. C. Goretta, N. Chen, M. Runde, S. J. Rothman, and J. L. Routbort, Appl. Phys. Lett. 60, 2291 (1992)]. The volume diffusivity of 110Ag in 2223 is given by D=6.7×107 exp[(−334±12 kJ/mol/RT] cm2/s at temperatures from 600 to 817 °C, and is not very sensitive to oxygen partial pressure between 103 and 105 Pa at 760 °C. The diffusion coefficient of 110Ag in 2201 is described by D=155 exp[(−196±6 kJ/mol)/RT].

Notes: Steady-state flow stress of dense (99% of theoretical) polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7−δ has been measured in direct compression at temperatures between 870 and 980 °C in oxygen partial pressures of 0.03, 0.18, and 1.0×105 Pa for strain rates between 5×10−6 and 4×10−5 s−1. The stress exponent was close to one, indicating that diffusional flow was the dominant deformation mechanism. The flow stress decreased with decreasing oxygen partial pressure, obeying a power law with an exponent of approximately 1/2 . The activation energy was about 800 kJ/mol at an oxygen partial pressure 1×105 Pa, but decreased to 600 kJ/mol at a pressure of 3×103 Pa.

Notes: Tracer diffusion of 110Ag in YBa2Cu3O7−δ has been measured in the temperature range 800–950 °C using serial sectioning. The polycrystalline samples were made either from a powder containing about 0.2% Zr prepared by a conventional technique, or from a purer powder that had been calcined in low-pressure oxygen. Concentration profiles indicate both a volume and a fast diffusivity path contribution to diffusion. The activation energies were 227±3 and 249±17 kJ/mole for samples made from powder calcined in low-pressure oxygen and conventional powder, respectively. Diffusion was slower in the samples made from the purer powder.

Notes: An experimental self-reinforced hot-pressed silicon nitride was used to examine the effects of microstructure on high-temperature deformation mechanisms during compression testing. At 1575–1625°C, the as-received material exhibited a stress exponent of 1 and appeared to deform by steady-state grain-boundary sliding accommodated by solution-reprecipitation of silicon nitride through the grain-boundary phase. The activation energy was 610 ± 110 kJ/mol. At 1450–1525°C for the as-received material, and at 1525–1600°C for the larger-grained heat-treated samples, the stress exponent was 〉1. Damage, primarily in the form of pockets of intergranular material at two-grain junctions, was observed in these samples.

Notes: Abstract We have carried our constant strain-rate compression tests on polycrystalline Cr2O3 and Cr2O3 doped with 0.09 wt. % Y2O3 to establish whether there exists an effect of Y2O3 on the plasticity of Cr2O3. This study is motivated by previous work on the oxidation of alloys containing reactive-element additions. In that work, it has been observed that the addition of oxygen-active elements, such as Y to alloys that form Cr2O3 or Al2O3 oxide layers upon exposure at high temperature, strongly enhances the adhesion of the oxide layer to the base alloy as compared with alloys without reactive-element additions. We have found that at 1200°C (1) chromia exhibits limited plasticity at high temperatures, and (2) the presence of Y in the oxides does not enhance plasticity compared with addition-free oxides.
