Notes: High pressures generated with sintered diamond as the second stage anvils in the "6-2 type'' double-stage apparatus have been calibrated by x-ray diffraction with synchrotron radiation. Sintered diamond has permitted a fair amount of x-ray transparency although the chemical analysis shows the existence of 14-wt. % Co binder. Anvils with a top face of 0.7 mm diam performed the generation of 60 GPa, which was confirmed on the lattice parameters of B1 and B2 phases of NaCl. No appreciable plastic deformation of the used anvils has certified the higher pressure generation.

Notes: Abstract Single crystal stishovite with a square prismatic habit and maximum length 0.8 mm was grown from α-quartz at 120 kbar and ∼1,300° C. Li2WO4, chosen as a result of a previous experiment in growing coesite, was also successful as flux for stishovite. Single crystal X-ray structure analysis of the crystals thus obtained has been carried out at high temperatures under ambient pressure. Lattice constant measurements give a larger thermal expansion coefficient along the a-axis than along the c-axis. The bond distances and bond angles show a decreasing distortion of the SiO6 octahedron with increasing temperature. The increasing amplitude of thermal vibrations of oxygen atoms with increasing temperature results in increasing O-O repulsion in the basal plane, which explains the observed crystallographic changes.

Notes: Abstract Using diamond anvil cell, the57Fe Mössbauer spectra of pure iron foil and α-Fe2O3 powder under high pressure have been measured at room temperature.57Fe Mössbauer spectra of α-Fe were measured from 15 GPa to 45 GPa. Isomer shift value decreased and the quadrupole splitting slightly increased as the pressure increased.57Fe Mössbauer spectra of Fe2O3 under high pressure up to 72 GPa were observed. Above 52 GPa, the new lines appeared at the center portion of the spectrum corresponding to the new high pressure phase. The spectrum of new high pressure phase consisted of 6-line splitting and doublet, suggesting the existence of the two different kinds of iron states in it.
