Notes: GaAlAs gain-guided semiconductor lasers having a curved facet are fabricated by employing reactive ion beam etching. The use of the curved facet permits stabilization of transverse mode in the direction parallel to the junction plane, reduction of astigmatism, and multilongitudinal mode oscillation.

Notes: A new technique of growing nitrided oxide at low temperatures has been developed. Fluorine-enhanced thermal oxidation of silicon in O2+NF3 at temperatures below 800 °C and subsequent annealing of the fluorinated oxide in pure ammonia gas at the same temperature result in the formation of nitrided oxide. The dielectric breakdown strength of the fluorinated oxide is improved by the nitridation. Also, the nitrided oxide acts as a protective layer against alkaline ion contamination.

Notes: A two-dimensional radiation by a modulated thin-sheet electron beam, which propagates parallel to a reflection grating composed of a slightly corrugated conducting surface, is investigated. The radiation can be interpreted as a radiative leakage of space-charge waves supported by the electron beam, when the effect of radiated fields back on the motion of electrons is taken into account. A self-consistent analysis of the leaky space-charge waves is presented using a perturbation approach based on the multiple-space scales. The coupled-wave equations governing the radiative leakage of space-charge waves are systematically derived. The analytical expressions for physical quantities characterizing the radiation are obtained in closed form. Numerical results of the leakage coefficient, the phase change due to the leakage, and the radiation efficiency are given for both of the fast and slow space-charge waves.

Notes: We have investigated the immunoperoxidase staining pattern in the epidermis and dermal infiltrates of highly inflamed portions of psoriatic lesions, selecting for biopsy early pinpoint lesions or margins of active plaque lesions. We found positive intercellular staining for HLA-DR antigens in localized areas of the epidermis in about half of the patients tested. In contrast, OKT6 antigen was found only on the dendritic cells in the epidermis and dermis in all cases. These findings support the hypothesis that an active cellular immune reaction involving the epidermis, possibly associated with the expression of HLA-DR antigens on keratinocytes, occurs in the highly inflamed areas of psoriatic lesions, particularly in early pinpoint lesions or at the edges of spreading plaque lesions.

Notes: [Auszug] A theoretical model is presented for the coupled evolution of cerium and neodymium isotopes in terrestrial rocks. Data presented for samples ranging from mid-ocean-ridge basalts to continental metamorphic rocks show that, while mantle-derived rocks are dispersed on a Ce-Nd diagram, continental ...

Notes: Abstract We report here the direct observation of the motion of cytoplasmic subcellular organelles and macromolecules within single, metabolically active, pancreatic acinar cells using microscope laser-light scattering spectroscopy (MLLSS). The relative amount and the “effective diffusion coefficient” of the mobile particles shows a marked difference in magnitude between the apical and basal regions of the cell. Secretory stimulation evoked by the cholinergic agonist bethanechol induces changes in the relative motion in the cytoplasm of approximately one fifth of the acinar cells. This study demonstrates the feasibility and utility of a novel technique, MLLSS, for the analysis of intracellular events in regions as small as (2 μm)3 in single, granule secreting cells. It also shows MLLSS to be a powerful tool for the detection and measurement of altered motion in disrete subcellular regions of small mammalian cells after biochemical and pharmacological manipulations.

Notes: Abstract Very long virus-like filaments were found in calyx region of the reproductive tracts of the braconid parasitoid,Microplitis mediator Haliday, which attacks the Noctuid,Pseudaletia (=Leucania) separata Walker. These filaments are nuclear in origin; Feulgen and methyl-green pyronin reactions revealed cytochemically the presence of DNA. Filaments are attached to the surface of the chorion of an egg until hatching and function to suppress the encapsulation reaction of the host. Furthermore, it was observed that serosal cells, 18-h and 24-h from oviposition, released substances possibly related to the inhibition of encapsulation.
