Notes: Magnetic and optical properties of films composed of ferromagnetic fine particles aligned in a magnetic field were investigated. The spin-coated films were prepared by using a solution of magnetite fine particles dissolved in water-diluted polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) on glass substrates, and followed by drying at 80 °C and solidifying at 200 °C in a magnetic field. Linear-chain clusters of magnetite particles were formed in a considerably weak field below 1 kOe, which give rise to magnetic and optical uniaxial anisotropies. Both properties vary depending on preparation conditions such as the particle concentration, the viscosity of the solution, and the field strength during drying.

Notes: Several (111) oriented 56Fe3O4 films containing a 5-A(ring)-thick 57Fe3O4 probe layer at or below the surface were grown epitaxially on the α-Al2O3 (0001) surface by a reactive vapor deposition method. Conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied at 6, 78, and 300 K by using a recently developed helium-filled proportional counter. The well-crystallized surface has been found to be surprisingly stable even in air as characterized by the Mössbauer parameters that are almost the same as for the bulk. Moreover, the Verwey transition was detected clearly even in the 5-A(ring)-thick surface layer. However, the ferrous components seem to have changed their Mössbauer parameters probably because of their sensitivity to any crystalline field modifications in the surface. Generally speaking, the quality of epitaxial Fe3O4 films is very high: Any unusual surface state, if present, is confined in a shallow depth of ≤ 5 A(ring).

Notes: Analogous to the localization of the wave function of an electron in a random potential (Anderson localization), in the macroscopic system of magnetoelastic waves (MEWs) propagating in a highly magnetostrictive string exhibiting the giant ΔE effect, the piling-up of MEWs into a wave-packet in a restricted small region of the string is expected. This wave-packet is subject to hopping in a discontinuous wave by applying a magnetic field due to the change in the local elastic states caused by the ΔE effect. From this expectation, a theoretical analysis was performed focusing on the derivation of localization conditions of MEWs. The analysis was carried out using a one-dimensional string model having high magnetostriction. The string is assumed to be composed of random chains with (1) alloy-type disorder (random weights of masses with equal spacings) and (2) liquid-type disorder (random spacings of masses with equal weights). For the elastic and magnetoelastic constants of the string, the value of Fe78Si10B12 amorphous wire (Unitika) were used in the calculations. No substantial changes in the localization states were not recognized in both modes. The analysis revealed that, when the change of the apparent Young's modulus with magnetic field ΔE is 28%, the localized MEWs are subject to hopping conserving their wave identities (eigenfrequencies and eigenstates). This result in considered to originate from the changes in the disorder conditions to support the localization of MEWs. To confirm the above theoretical prediction experimentally, MEW properties have been measured by using Fe78Si10B12 amorphous wires connecting weights made of leads to form the random chain structure. The localized MEWs are, indeed, observed by detecting the local vibrations of the wires. Theoretical and experimental results will be presented in detail at the conference. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Organic thin films of copper-phthalocyanine (CuPc) and aluminum tris-8-hydroxyquinline (Alq3) were fabricated via KrF laser ablation. In spite of poor crystallinity exhibited in the reconstructed organic films, the CuPc film still works as a hole-transport layer in electroluminescence cells based on the CuPc and Alq3 layers. Electroluminescence at ∼500 nm was obtained with a low initiation voltage of ∼12 V. There is no significant difference in electroluminescence performance for devices fabricated via laser ablation and thermal evaporation. Emission at ∼600 nm caused by energy transfer from Alq3 to 4-(Dicyanomethylene)-2-methyl-6-(p-dimethylaminostyryl)-4H-pyran (DCM) is also observed from a DCM-doped Alq3 emission layer. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A 10-month-old girl with mild developmental delay became hemiplegic after seizures. Cranial CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed no lesions related to vascular diseases, but brain atrophy on the right side was remarkable. Digital subtraction angiography showed slightly decreased visualization of peripheral branches of the right medial cerebral artery. Propionic acidaemia was diagnosed on the basis of high plasma levels of propionic acid and its metabolites and the elevated urinary excretion of these acids. With therapy, the levels of these acids fell, and her left hemiplegia disappeared 3 months later.

Notes: Abstract Variation of the gel region with heat-treatment and variation of the melt-quenched glass region with cooling rates were compared for the B2O3-Na2O-TiO2 system. Gels were prepared by the sol-gel method without catalyst using boron tributoxide (B(OBu)3) sodium methoxide (NaOCH3) and titanium tetraisopropoxide (Ti(OPr)4). The gel region was in the composition range B2O3 = 0 to 90, Na2O = 0 to 60, and TiO2 = 0 to 100 mol % at 50 ° C. The crystalline phases precipitated were boric acid (H3BO3), sodium metaborate hydrate (NaBO22H2O), and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), or sodium carbonate (Na2CO3). A 500 °C, heat treatment for 2 h reduced the gel regions to a composition range of B2O3 = 50 to 90, Na2O = 10 to 30 and TiO2 = 0 to 20 mol %, but treatment at 800 ° C produced melts which became glassy upon cooling. On the other hand, a twin-roller method produced a wide range of glass region which includes a high concentration of TiO2 up to 70 mol %. The as-prepared gel region was found to correspond fairly well to the twin-roller glass region and the thermally most stable gel region was close to the air-quenched glass region. It was speculated that the B2O3- or Na2O-rich composition had not gelled because of the high water solubility of these gels.

Notes: Abstract Cytochrome P450rm was previously isolated from the basidiomycete yeast Rhodotorula minuta as a bifunctional enzyme with isobutene-forming and benzoate 4-hydroxylase activities. We cloned the gene and corresponding cDNA for P450rm in order to characterize the enzyme in the context of fungal phylogeny and physiology. From the cDNA sequence, P450rm was deduced to have 527 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 59 136. P450rm shared 48% amino acid sequence identity with CYP53A1 from Aspergillus niger, indicating that the gene belongs to a novel subfamily of CYP53, CYP53B. However, the organization of the P450rm gene, which has eight exons and seven introns, differed completely to that of CYP53A1. Northern analysis demonstrated that the level of P450rm mRNA expression increased when L-phenylalanine was used as sole carbon source. These results suggest that P450rm has been well conserved during the evolution of fungi as a benzoate 4-hydroxylase in the dissimilation pathway starting from L-phenylalanine

Notes: Abstract The Sr(Ga0.5Ta0.5)O3-based perovskites with O2- and/or Sr2+ vacancies were formed by changing the A-site and/or B-site cation ratios. The Sr-deficient perovskites with a limited composition of Sr0.86(Ga0.36Ta0.64)O3 could be obtained, whereas oxygen vacancies were hardly created. The B′-site Ga3+ cation could be replaced with large Sc3+, In3+, Y3+, Nd3+ and La3+. The crystal symmetry of the complex perovskites changed from cubic (B′=Ga3+, Sc3+, In3+) to tetragonal (B′=La3+) through rhombohedral (B′=Y3+, Nd3+). The dielectric permittivities of these ceramics indicated no distinct dependence on the B′-site cation species. The temperature coefficient of permittivity might be associated with the symmetry change of the perovskite phases. Higher microwave Qf values, 〉Qf=38 000 GHz, were obtained for our complex perovskite ceramics, except with B′=La3+.
