Notes: Abstract The impact sites of the Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 are observed with the 101-cm telescope at Bisei Astronomical Observatory until the end of August with B, V, R, I, and methane-band (0.89εm) filters. The outline of the observation is briefly described.

Notes: Summary In the outermost layer of porcine-developing enamel adjacent to the ameloblasts in the secretory stage, the activities of two proteinases having molecular masses of 76 and 78kDa were detected by enzymography using gelatin as a substrate. On the other hand, high activities of known 30 and 34kDa proteinases were localized in the inner layer of the enamel. The 76kDa proteinase cleaved the carboxylterminal peptide of porcine 25kDa amelogenin to convert it to 20kDa amelogenin. The 78kDa proteinase also acted on the 25kDa amelogenin similarly, but its activity was weak. The results indicate that the 25kDa amelogenin synthesized and secreted by ameloblasts is converted to 20kDa amelogenin by the action of proteinase localized in the outermost layer of the secretory enamel, and then further degraded by the proteinases in the inner layer of the enamel associated with the increase of mineralization.

Notes: Abstract Amelogenins were extracted from the thin outer layer of porcine secretory enamel and purified by gel filtration and reverse-phase HPLC. The results of amino acid sequencing of the purified porcine amelogenins indicated the presence of at least four prototype amelogenins translated from alternatively spliced transcripts. The results of mass spectroscopy of the CNBr-cleaved peptides derived from the 25kDa amelogenin indicated that porcine 25kDa amelogenin is neither phosphorylated nor glycosylated.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Potosiit and Incait wurden in Erzen der Hoei-Mine, Oita Präfektur, Japan, nachgewiesen.
Notes: Summary Potosiite and incaite have been found at the Hoei mine, Oita Prefecture, Japan. Potosiite occurs as tabular crystals (3 cm x 2 cm in size), and is associated with arsenopyrite, pyrrhotite, stannite, jamesonite and pyrite, whereas incaite occurs as polycrystalline aggregates rimming galena or as hair-like masses in a matrix of kutnahorite. X-ray powder data reveal that these minerals are potosiite and incaite, respectively. Electron-microprobe analyses of potosiite and incaite gave the general formula (Pb, Sn)2+ 6+xFeSb2Sn4+ 2S14+x, with x 〈 2. Potosiite is homogeneous, whereas incaite, in contact with galena, is quite heterogeneous. Reflectance data for potosiite show that its bireflectance is one of the lowest among opaque minerals with a sheet-like structure.

Notes: Abstract Left ventricular function during exercise and recovery was investigated in patients with angina pectoris, ST segment depression during exercise and angiographically normal coronary arteries (syndrome X) using a continuous left ventricular function monitor with cadmium telluride detector (CdTe-VEST). Fourteen patients with syndrome X and 14 patients with atypical chest pain without ST segment depression during exercise and normal coronary arteries (control group) performed supine ergometric exercise after administration of 740–925 MBq of technetium-99m labelled red blood cells, and left ventricular function was monitored every 20 s using CdTe-VEST. Left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) response was impaired (≤55% increase from rest to peak exercise) in 11 or 14 patients with syndrome X but in none of the control patients. Resting EF was similar in the two groups (62.1%±6.7% in patients with syndrome X, 61.9%±6.2% in controls); however, EF increase from rest to peak exercise was lower in syndrome X (−3.1±9.5% vs 14.7%±7.4%, P 〈0.001). After cessation of exercise, all patients showed rapid EF increase over baseline and this EF overshoot was lower (19.3%±8.3% vs 26.4%±7.3%, P 〈0.001) with the time to EF overshoot longer (114±43 s vs 74±43 s, P〈0.05) in patients with syndrome X. Thus, in patients with syndrome X, left ventricular dysfunction was frequently observed during exercise in spite of normal epicardial coronary arteries.

Notes: Abstract Material transport through the shelf edge to the deep ocean determines the fate of particulate matter generated in productive coastal seas. In stratified estuaries, onshore flow in the bottom layer generally keeps particulate matter generated in the upper layer and settled down to the bottom layer within the estuaries. AT the shelf edge of Tokyo Bay under the condition of average onshore flow in the bottom layer, we observed higher vertical sediment flux during ebb than flood tidal currents. The on-shelf and off-shelf differences in turbulent mixing and water depth mainly cause such difference in sediment flux. We propose to call this export process of particulate matter “the tidal pump” at the shelf edge.
