Notes: The effect of Pt additives in TbFeCo(Pt)/Pt multilayers on magnetic properties and magneto-optical Kerr effect is investigated. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy Ku of the multilayer becomes larger (∼2×106 erg/cm3) than that of the TbFeCo(Pt) single layer. Pt layers are found to contribute significantly to the polar Kerr spectra at ultraviolet photon energies beyond 4 eV. The largest enhancement in the Kerr rotation θK is found at about 5 eV. The Kerr rotation θK and ellipticity ηK are enhanced with increasing Pt layer-thickness tPt, and become saturated at tPt=12 Å. This result implies that Pt atoms up to about 6 Å from the interfaces are contributing to the Kerr activity. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thermal expansions of the lattice parameters a and c of the system in the title have been measured by x-ray diffraction technique to investigate the nature of magnetic interactions as well as chemical bond in these systems. Our data reveals that a spontaneous magnetostriction caused by the Co–Co intrasublattice interaction in YCo4B (n=1) occurs in the c plane unlike YCo5 whose magnetostriction occurs only along the c axis. It is also found that the positive spontaneous magnetostriction of GdCo4B in the c plane can be divided into three contributions due to the Co–Co, Co–Gd, and Gd–Gd interactions in the crystal. Thermal expansion coefficients in the c plane in the paramagnetic temperature region strongly decrease with increasing n in the Gd system. This implies a significant covalent bonding in the R–B layer in the present compounds. These results are discussed on the basis of the results of energy band calculation together with the previous magnetic data. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The origin of the large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy constant Ku of Co3Pt alloy thin films is discussed. The films deposited onto Al2O3(0001), Al2O3(112¯0), and MgO(111) substrates held at 230–450 °C during deposition exhibit Ku of the order of 107 erg/cm3 at room temperature. While the one dimensional long range order parameter S estimated by x-ray diffraction is very consistent with the development of the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in the films deposited at 380–450 °C, very little evidence is found to suggest the correlation between S and Ku for the lower deposition temperature range (230–380 °C). To explain this, a short range ordering is suggested to be responsible for the origin of Ku, similar to the cases in Pt72Co28 alloys. The magneto-optical polar Kerr activity of ordered Co3Pt film is found to be enhanced for both θK and ηK in the photon energy range from 2 to 4 eV. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Intercellular lipids of the stratum corneum contribute threefold to the maintenance of a healthy skin: by hydration, cell adhesion, and reduction of transepidermal water loss. All of these functions can be attributed to the self-organizing property of the amphiphilic molecules of the stratum corneum lipids. A new type of skin care product called Lamellar Gel was developed, which contains a (synthesized) pseudo-ceramide. Its structure is similar to that of ceramide found among the stratum corneum lipids, which allows it to control intramolecular interactions. Compared to regular emulsions the Lamellar Gel demonstrated better skin care characteristics regarding permeability, skin hydration, and skin occlusion. This was attributed to the fact that it formed the same self-organizing structure as natural stratum corneum lipids, hence showing a high affinity to the skin. A high moisturizing effect was observed as the Lamellar Gel combines the benefits of both O/W and W/O emulsions: it provides the same initial hydration as an O/W emulsion and at the same time the same occlusivity as a W/O emulsion. Transepidermal water loss increases under dry environmental conditions. This especially affects the skin around the eyes, where the skin is very thin, and wrinkles are very easily formed.

Notes: The contrast of the secondary electron images in scanning ion microscopy (SIM) is compared with that in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with ultrahigh vacuum for Al, Cu, Ag, and Au metals deposited on the Si(100) clean surface. The order of the secondary electron yields as a function of the atomic number (Z2) for ion bombardment is opposite to that for electron bombardment. The brightness of the secondary electron images observed by a focused Ga+ ion beam at 30 keV decreases with increasing Z2, while that by the electron beam increases with Z2. On the other hand, the order of the total secondary ion yields in SIM increases with Z2. The secondary electron image observed by a focused Ar+-ion beam at 3 keV shows the similar contrast to that of the Ga+-ion beam. The different Z2 dependence of the secondary electron yields between SEM and SIM was quantitatively confirmed by the total secondary electron spectra and is discussed based on the range profile below the surface, and it is concluded that the decrease of the secondary electron yields in SIM is attributed to the increase of the reflected ions at the surface with increasing Z2. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Spontaneous X-ray parametric scattering from a diamond single crystal has been observed at the Photon Factory. The high perfection of the diamond single crystal and the small angular divergence of synchrotron radiation has enabled down-converted X-ray photon pairs to scatter into two small solid angles which satisfy the phase-matching condition. High-efficiency noise reduction was performed using avalanche photodiode detectors with good time resolution.

Notes: Abstract. Nuclear interaction and charge-changing cross sections were measured for 950 ⋅A MeV 20N, 20O, 20F, 20Ne, 20Na and 20Mg beams incident on a carbon target. The experimental results are compared to other data, in particular to those obtained for stable nuclei. Root mean square nuclear matter radii and upper limits of root mean square proton radii are derived from the experimental data. Evidence is presented for the existence of a neutron skin in 20N.

Notes: Abstract. The distribution, physiological function, amino acid sequence and gene structure of myoglobin and myoglobin-like proteins from various taxa are summarized, and their evolution is discussed. Although it has long been thought that all haemoglobins and myoglobins have evolved from a common ancestral gene, the knowledge presently accumulated about the structures of these proteins suggests that there may be three distinct origins a ‘universal globin’, a ‘compact globin’ and an ‘IDO-like globin’.
