    Notizen: Using oxides as examples, the defect chemistry is systematically analyzed for a low-temperature regime, at which the oxygen exchange equilibrium reaction is no longer reversible, while the internal defect equilibrium reactions (in particular, the electronic transfer processes) may still be reversible. For the partially frozen-in states as well as for the complete equilibrium cases, defect concentrations are numerically calculated for idealized model oxides including pure, acceptor-doped, and donor-doped oxides. Foreign ions (major/minor, shallow/deep, acceptor/donor), oxygen vacancies, and oxygen interstitials are taken into account as redox-active defects. The deep-level (redox-active) defects often dominate defect concentrations in the partially frozen-in states, while the major dopants fix the concentrations in complete equilibrium. The temperature and oxygen partial pressure dependencies of defect concentrations in the partially frozen-in states are discussed. The description does not only allow one to extend the defect chemistry to lower temperatures, such as room temperature, but also offers a quantitative basis for manipulation and prediction of defect concentrations in ionic crystals. Thereby, the physical and chemical performance of such materials may be controlled at temperatures lower than those at which the oxygen nonstoichiometry is established. The results are equally relevant for applications in solid state physics (e.g., compound semiconductors) and in solid state chemistry (e.g., solid electrolytes, mixed conductors). © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The low-temperature defect chemistry of oxides is considered, characterized by frozen-in interaction with the ambient oxygen and reversibility of internal interactions, in particular the redistribution of electronic carriers. Analytical relations describing ionic and electronic defect concentrations are derived for various conditions. The presence of redox-active, i.e., deep-level, dopants proves to be of special interest in this context. The analytical relations permit the detailed discussion of the dependencies of the charge carrier concentrations on the control parameters. Such analytical relations are useful for understanding and tailoring defect concentrations and thus related properties of electroceramics. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Vacuum ultraviolet absorption spectroscopy was developed for the measurement of absolute fluorine (F) atom density in reactive plasmas. In order to minimize the influence of radiation trapping (self-absorption) in the light source, fluorescence at a wavelength of 95.85 nm from the F atoms in an electron–cyclotron resonance (ECR) CF4 plasma, which was operated with a low microwave power (0.1 kW) and a low gas pressure (1 mTorr), was employed as the probe emission. A windowless transmission system for the probe emission was constructed by connecting the ECR light source with the target plasma and the detection system using vacuum tubes having small slits. The connection tubes were differentially evacuated with turbomolecular pumps to prevent neutral particles from passing through between the ECR and target plasmas. The present method was applied to high-density CF4 and C4F8 plasmas produced by helicon-wave discharges. The accuracy of the measurement was examined carefully by evaluating various sources of error. In the present article, we have emphasized the evaluation of the radiation trapping effect in the light source plasma. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Large crystals of 2-furyl methacrylic anhydride were successfully grown, making it possible to measure accurately their piezoelectric and electro-optic coefficients. Low modulation frequency electro-optic coefficients at a wavelength of 632.8 nm are: r33=7.1±0.4 pm/V and r13=4.5±0.2 pm/V, whereas the inverse piezoelectric coefficients are: d33=8.2±0.4 pm/V and d13=2.2±0.1 pm/V. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: We report the perinatal presentation and evolution of Netherton’s syndrome in siblings. The first patient, a female infant, presented with asphyxia at birth due to aspiration of desquamated scale, non-bullous ichthyosiform erythroderma, and hypernatraemic dehydration which she had for several days. Subsequently, she failed to thrive, with recurrent bacterial infections until 5 months of age, and very high serum IgE levels (1200 U/mL). Trichorrhexis invaginata and pili torti were identified at 18 months. The second patient was the younger brother of the first. Hydramnios and hyperechoic material in the amniotic fluid were observed by ultrasound at 35 weeks gestation, and he was delivered by elective Caesarian section at 40 weeks. At birth, no hair abnormality was demonstrated but, like his sister, his body was covered with thick caseous material, and he was erythrodermic. He failed to thrive, but serum IgE levels were normal until 5 months of age. Typical trichorrhexis invaginata was not observed until 7 months of age. Thus, the hair abnormality and high serum IgE levels in Netherton’s syndrome appear late relative to the ichthyosiform erythroderma.

    Notizen: In 1997 the prefabricated house of the TARA Sakabe project was constructed very near to the Photon Factory ring, and many computers were installed for crystallographic data handling. A data server with high speed and large capacity was required to improve the efficiency of the protein data collection system which integrated a `high'-security computer network. The new network, based on a 100 Mbps Ethernet, consists of a DEC AlphaServer 4000 with a 115 Gbytes RAID disk, DLT as a backup device, CISCO PIX-32 as a firewall between the TARA private network and KEK, and a 100 Mbps switching hub to be linked to imaging-plate readers and workstations. Therefore, the digital output data from the imaging-plate reader are directly recorded on the server disk resulting in higher efficiency of the users' beam time. In contrast to recording on tape, there is very little problem with backup resulting in a high confidence in the data-collection system.

    Notizen: Abstract. Tunable laser pulses at wavelengths from 250 to 880 nm were fired at plumes produced by laser ablation of a carbon target in He atmosphere. We observed an electrical current due to photoionization, which roughly reflected the behavior of carbon clusters in the plume. The photoionization current had dynamic temporal variations, comprising a rapid increase at the beginning (TD〈0.2 ms, where TD is the time after a YAG laser pulse for laser ablation irradiates the target), a gradual increase for 0.2〈TD〈3 ms, and a slow decrease for TD〉7 ms. The increasing phase of the photoionization current was synchronized with the decreasing phase of C2 radical density. For He gas pressures lower than 0.8 Torr no photoionization current was detected. The growth rate of the photoionization current was higher for a higher He gas pressure.

    Notizen: Abstract Although various operative procedures have been applied for advanced or terminal osteoarthritis of the hip joints in relatively young patients, the long-term results are controversial. Since 1974, we have performed the triple-cup arthroplasty developed by Aoki in 110 patients who were comparatively young. The triple-cup assembly is composed of stainless-steel outer and inner cups between which a high density polyethylene cup is incorporated, so that there are basically four mobile surfaces, but the major movement is actually taking place between the outer cup and the plastic cup [8]. We have sometimes encountered migration of the cups, which caused hip joint pain and decreased the range of motion. Revision surgery was required for 25 hip joints in 21 patients (23%). The acetabulum was very thin in almost all cases, so that reaming of the cavity had to be restricted to the minimum possible. The femoral head in the cup was often covered with a layer of fibrous tissue. We could utilize the femoral head as a bone graft, even though the residual volume of bone varied in each case. The result of revision surgeries after the triple-cup arthroplasty was good clinically and radiographically at last follow-up.

    Notizen: Abstract A retrospective survey of 1,445 snowboarders and 10,152 skiers was undertaken to determine the incidence, pattern and severity of both snowboarding and skiing injuries. The incidence of snowboarding injury (0.33%) was higher than that of skiing injury (0.11%, P 〈 0.01). Also, in showboarding there was frequent involvement of the arms (51.3%) when compared with skiing (25.9%, P 〈 0.001). In the arms, fracture (45.7%) was frequently observed in snowboarding, vs 31.3% in skiing. The wrist was the most affected site (18.7%, P 〈 0.01) in snowboarding (skiing 2.3%), and the fracture rate was significantly high (71.6%, P 〈 0.001). The rate of dislocation of the elbow (27.7%) was also higher in snowboarding than in skiing (13.5%, P 〈 0.001). Regarding arm injuries, 57.9% of injured snowboarders were beginners whose experience was shorter than 1 year, and 91.5% was caused by falling down. These results indicate that a snowboarding injury involving the upper limb region is a severe accident, with a frequent risk of fracture in the wrist and dislocation of the elbow. The severity of arm injuries in snowboarding seems to be caused by direct force on the wrist and elbow, which receive the full impact of a fall. These data suggest that beginners should have appropriate lessons of basic skills including safe falling. The development of a safety system also appears sensible to prevent such severe injuries in snowboarding.

    Notizen: Abstract A comparative ultrastructure study using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of ultrathin sections, freeze-fracture replication, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was conducted on the gastrodermal lamellar microvilli in adults of Echinostoma paraensei, E. caproni, and E. trivolvis. Lamellar projections observed by SEM were mainly planiform and rhomboidal or paddle-shaped, and they were commonly seen in the three species. The distal margins of these lamellae were mainly smooth in E. paraensei, whereas filiform or digitiform extensions in the margins occurred occasionally in E. caproni and frequently in E. trivolvis. Freeze-fracture TEM elucidated significant interspecific differences in the numbers of intramembranous particles (IMP) per square micrometer; the numbers of IMP were significantly lower in E. trivolvis than in either E. caproni or E. paraensei. Thus, ultrastructural differences in the gastrodermal lamellae of adult echinostomes will be a taxonomically useful criterion for distinguishing species of Echinostoma.
