Notes: To identify markers for the everbearing gene in strawberries, 199 F1 progeny plants were produced from a cross between ‘Ever Berry’ (a Japanese everbearing strawberry) and ‘Toyonoka’ (a Japanese Junebearing strawberry) as the experimental population. The results of flowering tests produced 97 everbears and 102 Junebears. The chi-square test gave a goodness of fit for the expected ratio of 1 : 1 for everbears to Junebears, suggesting the inheritance of the everbearing trait is controlled by a monogenic dominant gene. RAPD analyses on this trait were carried out using ‘Ever Berry’ and ‘Toyonoka’. Seventy-one primers, which produced 89 polymorphic fragments between the two parents, were identified from a total of 175 primers. Five markers relating to the everbearing trait were selected from 26 of the 199 progeny plants. The remaining 173 seedlings were analysed with these five markers and a linkage map was constructed using all of the 199 F1 progeny plants. The length of this linkage group is 39.7 cM. The closest markers found, OPE07-1 and OPB05-1, are respectively mapped at 11.8 and 15.8 cM on each side of the everbearing gene.

Notes: [Auszug] The effect of quantum statistics in quantum gases and liquids results in observable collective properties among many-particle systems. One prime example is Bose–Einstein condensation, whose onset in a quantum liquid leads to phenomena such as superfluidity and superconductivity. A ...

Notes: Summary Acute effects of occlusion of the middle cerebral artery on local cerebral blood flow (LCBF) and local cerebral glucose utilization (LCGU) were investigated quantitatively in separate groups of rats using (14C) iodoantipyrine (14C-IAP) or (14C) 2-deoxyglucose (14C-DG) respectively. LCBF was significantly decreased in the ipsilateral cerebral cortices (to less than 45 ml/100 g/min or 30% of the control side) and the lateral part of the striatum (to 22 ml/100 g/min or 10% of the control side) which were supplied by the middle cerebral artery. No significant changes in LCBF were found in any other of the subcortical regions. In contrast to the unanimous decrease of LCBF in the ipsilateral cortices and the lateral striatum, complexed changes in LCGU were found in not only the cortex and striatum but also in many other subcortical regions which were closely related to the distribution of the mesencephalic dopamine neurons, such as globus pallidus, substantia nigra, subthalamic nucleus, nucleus accumbens, olfactory tubercle and lateral habenular nucleus. Relevance of this putative neurotransmitter and GABA on the glucose metabolism in ischemic brain is discussed.

Notes: Summary A new temperature-controlled membrane oxygenator for perfusing isolated rat livers was assembled using a combination of heat-exchangeable rubber tubing and silicon rubber tubing. The apparatus supplied enough oxygen to satisfy the requirements of hemoglobin-free perfused livers.

Notes: A family of creep-resistant, Al2O3-forming austenitic (AFA) stainless steels was recentlydeveloped. The alloys exhibit excellent oxidation resistance up to ∼800°C, but are susceptible tointernal attack of Al at higher temperatures. In the present work, higher levels of Ni, Cr, Al, and Nbadditions were found to correlate with improved oxidation behavior at 900°C in air. The alloysgenerally appeared to be initially capable of external Al2O3 scale formation, with a subsequenttransition to internal attack of Al (internal oxidation and internal nitridation) that is dependent onalloy composition. Compositional profiles at the alloy/scale interface suggest that the transition tointernal oxidation is preceded by subsurface depletion of Al in the lower-Al compositions. In higherAl-containing compositions, NiAl second-phase precipitates act as an Al reservoir, and Al depletionmay not be a key factor. Alloy design directions to increase the upper-temperature limit ofprotective Al2O3 scale formation in these alloys are discussed

Notes: Summary A method for determination of serum glycated albumin by high-performance liquid chromatography is presented. The system involves anion exchange chromatography to separate albumin and consecutive boronate affinity chromatography to separate glycated and nonglycated albumin. The method is rapid (20 min), precise (coefficient of variation, 0.7–4.9%), requires only a small sample (5 μl), and can be automated. Assay of glycated albumin by this method is not influenced by the protein concentration of the sample or the presence of glucose. The variation in glycated albumin values in consecutive samples obtained within a day from diabetic patients (coefficient of variation, 2.02±0.65%) was significantly smaller (p〈0.001) than that of values for fructosamine (coefficient of variation, 4.33±2.0%). The values of glycated albumin in normal subjects (20.2±1.6%) were clearly less than those in diabetic patients [39,6±5.4% in 40 Type 1 (insulin-dependent) and 39.4±5.9% in 25 Type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) patients]. The serum glycated albumin level was well correlated with HbA1c in 65 diabetic patients (r=0.60). Because the life span of albumin in the circulation is short, measurement of glycated albumin should be useful as a short-term index of glycaemic control.

Notes: Abstract As much as 3–8 μg/g wet weight of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5HT) has been detected in mouse lung 10 sec after the animal was sacrificed by cervical dislocation. Perfusion of the lung was carried out to determine where the majority of 5HT was located. Of the total 5HT, 84.3% was measured in the perfusate in which 90–98% was recovered in the platelet-rich fraction. When lungs were dissected from mice without cervical dislocation, either after instantaneous killing by irradiation with high power microwaves or under anesthesia, 5HT in the lung was 0.40–1.60 μg/g tissue. These results show that cervical dislocation induces the entrapment of platelets in the pulmonary capillaries within 10 sec. The pulmonary accumulation of 5HT induced by cervical dislocation was approximately 50% inhibited by both prazosin and yohimbine, suggesting that the α-adrenergic receptor plays some part in the process. Norepinephrine but not isoproterenol augmented by 180% the response of pulmonary 5HT to cervical dislocation.

Notes: Internal friction of Ti-24mol%Nb-3mol%Al (Ti-24Nb-3Al) shape memory alloy with awell-developed texture was investigated by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) in a tensile modewith a frequency of 1Hz and a temperature range of 123~423K. Ti-24Nb-3Al alloy fabricated byAr arc-melting was cold-rolled with a reduction in thickness of 99% and then heat-treated at 1173Kfor 3.6ks in vacuum to develop a recrystallization texture. The martensitic transformationtemperature and internal friction (tan δ) were evaluated under the stress amplitude of 36MPa. Thetensile direction was selected to be the rolling direction (RD) and the transverse direction (TD).The specimen was β-single phase with a well-developed {112}β〈110〉β texture at room temperatureand exhibited high damping during martensitic transformation and in the martensite phase. Therelationship between internal friction and the tensile direction is discussed on the view point of thecrystallography of the transformation

Notes: Micro axis-symmetric aspherical glass lenses are being increasingly used in digital devices and optical devices. The glass lenses are molded by using micro ceramic dies such as tungsten carbide [1].Recently, as the pixel number of digital image sensors increases, the accuracy of micro molding dies are required to be much more precise than ever [2]. In this study, ultrasonic assisted polishing method is proposed and developed in order to finish micro axis-symmetric aspherical dies which were pre-ground with a diamond wheel [3]. In this paper, the proposed polishing method was applied to the micro aspherical molding dies to finish form compensation processing
