Notes: Coupled with the push-pull type velocity interferometer system for any reflector, an electronic streak camera recording system has been established, which provides subnanosecond time resolution in the detection of interferential fringes. Complete acceleration histories of Al, Au, and Pt foil plates, driven by pulsed laser beam at 30–400 GW/cm2, have been measured by using this system. For the 10-μm-thick Al foil irradiated at 280 GW/cm2, an ablative acceleration up to terminal velocity about 9 km/s within 25 ns has been determined with a velocity uncertainty of ∼1%. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Aqueous extracts from the skin mucus of two species of rabbitfishes Siganus fuscescens and S. guttatus showed antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacteria. Stability tests and chromatographic analyses suggested that the S. fuscescens antibacterial factor is an acidic glycoprotein with a molecular mass of 400 kDa.

Notes: A histopathological study was carried out on ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, with bacterial haemorrhagic ascites. The fish were obtained from culture ponds in Wakayama Prefecture in 2003. The causative agent was identified as Pseudomonas plecoglossicida by a slide agglutination test using anti-P. plecoglossicida FPC941 serum. Histopathological studies revealed lesions in spleen, kidney, liver, intestine, heart and gills. Lesions in the spleen and haematopoietic tissue were prominent and invaded by P. plecoglossicida. Necrotic lesions accompanied by haemorrhage, fibrin deposition and oedema occurred in the splenic pulp and sheathed tissue, and in the kidney. The liver also had necrotic lesions and abscess formations. However, the intestine, heart and gills were only slightly invaded by P. plecoglossicida. No lesions or bacteria were observed in the brain.

Notes: Background Seborrhoeic keratosis (SK) is a benign epidermal tumour with increased pigmentation. We have recently demonstrated that increased secretion of endothelin (ET)-1, a strong keratinocyte-derived mitogen and melanogen for human melanocytes, is intrinsically involved in the hyperpigmentation mechanism of SK. Objectives To examine whether the increased ET secretion results from cytokines that induce ET production and/or from differences in the processing of ET that lead to its final active, secreted form. Methods We used immunohistochemistry and reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (RT–PCR) to determine whether ET-inducing enzymes and/or cytokines are also highly expressed in SK. Results RT–PCR of mRNAs encoding interleukin (IL)-1α, tumour necrosis factor (TNF)-α and endothelin-converting enzyme (ECE)-1α demonstrated that there is an increased expression of TNF-α and ECE-1α mRNAs in SK, whereas the IL-1α transcript is rather downregulated in SK compared with that in perilesional normal epidermis. In parallel, immunohistochemical analysis of SK revealed marked immunostaining for TNF-α in basaloid cells at lower levels of the epidermis and in basal cells, and for ECE-1α in most basaloid and basal cells in comparison with their weak staining throughout the epidermis in perilesional normal controls. In contrast, immunostaining for IL-1α was almost negative in SK relative to distinctive staining throughout the epidermis in the perilesional normal controls. Conclusions These findings suggest that the increased secretion of ET-1 leading to enhanced pigmentation in SK results from the co-ordinated increased expression of TNF-α and ECE-1α.

Notes: We report a 52-year-old patient with cutaneous angiomas on the trunk in association with angiotropic lymphoma involving the nervous system. The lesional skin showed proliferation of atypical B cells in the capillaries. The diagnosis of angiotropic lymphoma with neurological deficits is often difficult before death. Thus, skin biopsy in this case proved to be diagnostic of the central nervous system disease without the risk of brain biopsy. The diagnosis of angiotropic lymphoma in the future may be achievable by biopsy of coincidental angiomas.

Notes: Objectives: Recently, interleukin (IL) 4 gene polymorphisms have been analyzed in association with periodontitis. Genetic differences between Caucasian and Japanese patients with periodontitis have previously been detected. The aim of the present study was to analyze IL-4 genotypes in Caucasian and Japanese patients with aggressive periodontitis (AgP).Material and Methods: One hundred and twenty-four subjects were included in the study, 31 Japanese and 30 Caucasian patients with generalized AgP, plus 30 Japanese and 33 Caucasian healthy controls. IL-4 polymorphisms were determined by polymerase chain reaction. A logistic regression was used to investigate the possible association of the genotypes with the disease in both populations. Odds ratio (OR) estimates were analyzed for allele frequencies. Results: No significant association of IL-4 polymorphisms with the risk of AgP was determined in either population. However, the allele frequencies showed different results between populations. The carriage of the polymorphism in intron 2 was higher in Caucasian patients compared with controls (OR: 2.0, 95% confidence interval: [1.0;4.2]. Furthermore, the frequency of the IL-4 promoter/intron 2 composite genotype (PP+/IP+) in patients and controls, respectively, was found to be approximately 25% and 60% higher in the Japanese population than in the Caucasian population. Conclusion: There was no evidence of an association of IL-4 genotypes and AgP in either population, although the frequencies of the IL-4 genotypes in the Japanese and the Caucasians were different.

Notes: Abstract. The feasibility of three-dimensional (3-D) photonic crystals made using textile technology was investigated. Three different textures consisting of the cotton-yarn and TiO2 dispersed resin; a crossed linear-yarn laminated fabric, a multi layered woven fabric, and a 3-D woven fabric, were fabricated. The microwave attenuation of the transmission amplitude through these photonic crystals was measured. The straight cotton-yarn as well as the wavy cotton-yarn/TiO2 dispersed resin photonic crystals exhibited band gaps in the 6 to 15 GHz range. Thus, we could fabricate successfully 3-D photonic crystals using textile technology.

Notes: Abstract. Transform-limited (TL) visible pulses with as short a duration as 4.7 fs with a 5 μJ pulse energy have been generated for the first time from a novel noncollinear optical parametric amplifier (NOPA). Both signal–idler group-velocity matching and pulse-front matching are essential to generate coherent down-converted pulses compressible to the TL pulse with more than a 150-THz bandwidth. Tunable operation with bandwidth-limited sub-10-fs pulses in the visible (550–700 nm) and near-infrared (900–1300 nm) ranges, achieved by increasing the seed chirp, is also a remarkable property. The NOPA is believed to be on useful light source for ultrafast spectroscopy on an extremely short time-scale.
